Licensing Specialist

To provide fair and consistent regulation of insurance producers, adjusters, and other licensees through proper licensing processes. This is essential for protecting Wyoming residents by assuring that only qualified individuals are engaged in the business of insurance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Review and analyze all paper and electronic insurance license applications for individuals and corporations through interpretation of insurance statutes, regulations and guidelines of the department to determine eligibility for licensure.
  • Approve or deny insurance license applications.
  • Process eligible applications and enter all necessary information into the insurance database.
  • Compose letters of explanation for rejected applications and other correspondence relating to licensing.
  • Process appointments, terminations, letters of certification/clearance and miscellaneous requests.
  • Review and process renewal applications and required evidence for continued eligibility for licensing, rejecting those that do not meet the required standards.
  • Review continuing education courses submitted for continuing education credit.
  • Approve, enter and verify data for individuals requiring continuing education compliance.
  • Extensive telephone, email, and in-person contact with applicants, licensees, insurance companies, state agencies and other regulatory departments to provide information on licensing forms, procedures, testing, and education requirements pursuant to state laws and regulations.
  • Participate in licensing team meetings and projects.
  • Act as a resource to provide information or interpretation of specific licensing rules/regulations to department staff, public or other government entities.
  • Responsible for licensing program integrity assurance.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to applicants who have knowledge and work experience of the insurance industry or insurance regulations.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of applicable computer applications, including insurance specific database, word processing and internet operations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in writing and verbally.
  • Knowledge of state laws and regulations governing insurance licensing.
  • Knowledge of department policies and practices relative to licensing individuals and firms.
  • Knowledge of continuing education requirements.
  • Knowledge of insurance industry general practices and procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize assigned work and ability to perform multi-task functions under pressure with constant interruptions.
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service.
  • Ability to make decisions and solve problems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the agency, and each respective section/program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Associate’s Degree (typically in Business)

PLUS

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Business Office Communications) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Office Support Specialist I

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Business Office Communications) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Office Support Specialist I

Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, driving an automobile, etc.

Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
