Habitat Protection Supervisor-Cheyenne

Work to protect or minimize impacts to crucial wildlife habitat throughout the state, through collaboration, recommendations, or other interpersonal contacts with land management agencies or private entities who are considering development activities in crucial wildlife areas. Work collaboratively with stakeholders to conserve and manage important habitats, for existing and future wildlife populations within the state.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

• Supervises Statewide Habitat Protection Program, which includes evaluations of federal, state, local government and industry projects, plans, policies and activities, and preparation of Department position statements and formal evaluation responses for Director or Deputy Director.
• Represents Director’s Office and Department at meetings on environmental issues, analysis of issues, and negotiation of solutions; serves as liaison to the Governor’s Planning office and other state, federal and local government agencies, and industry for collaboration on environmental issues.
• Represents the Department regarding statewide, interstate, and national level environmental matters; develops and maintains cooperative agreements and MOUs and their functions with other State and Federal agencies; maintains excellent communication and working relationships with other agencies; conducts special projects as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director.
• Supervises 5 professional and 1 clerical support staff, including administration, organization, work scheduling, budget and work flow for the Habitat Protection Program. Supervises development and maintenance of database system for unit correspondence and supporting information sources. Performs other department administrative support duties as assigned.
• Serves as Department lead for Sage Grouse Executive Order (SGEO) implementation, including coordination of the Sage Grouse Implementation Team, managing WYGISC Density and Disturbance Calculation Tool updates and contracts, management of disturbance and conservation data for submittal to the USFWS, and coordination with the USFWS, Mitigation Oversight Team, and other federal agencies in implementing the Greater Sage-Grouse Mitigation Framework MOU.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE:

• Knowledge of local, state and federal land use planning policies and laws.
• Knowledge of industrial development policies on private, state and federal lands.
• Skills/abilities to negotiate multi-stakeholder agreements.
• Skills/abilities to mediate and/or facilitate complex environmental issues.
• Skill/abilities to effectively communicate and collaborate with a variety of Department stakeholders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree (typically in Wildlife Management)
PLUS
Experience:
3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Game and Fish Manager I
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
6-8 years of progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Game and Fish Manager I

• Statewide travel is required.
