Field Epidemiologist-Cheyenne

The Wyoming Department of Health is looking for a motivated Epidemiologist to join the Public Health Division team.

The Public Health Division’s mission is to promote, protect and improve health and prevent disease and injury in Wyoming. This position is a field epidemiologist who conducts disease investigations of STD’s, HIV, Viral Hepatitis and TB, including interviewing cases for exposure and treatment information; participates in data analysis from epidemiological investigation and participates in application of public health interventions and control measures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

Epidemiologic investigations of STDs, viral hepatitis, HIV, and TB infection for Wyoming.

Assist in outbreak response to ensure the safety of Wyoming residents by interviewing cases for exposure information, updating news outlets on progress of outbreak control, and analyzing exposure data utilizing epidemiological and statistical methods.

Coordinate disease follow-up and investigation based on surveillance data.

Interact with Public Health Laboratory and other regional reference laboratories on test results.

Provide technical assistance and respond to inquiries from physicians and nurses related to STDs, viral hepatitis, HIV, and TB infection.

Provide education and training on evidence-based Communicable Disease prevention practices throughout the state.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:
Preference may be given to candidates with an Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) or equivalent degree.

KNOWLEDGE:
Applied epidemiology knowledge and skills.

Knowledge of communicable diseases to include STDs, viral hepatitis, HIV, and TB.

Knowledge of clinical laboratory testing procedures and the ability to interpret basic laboratory test results.

Knowledge of field investigation techniques and procedures, including the diagnosis, treatment, and case follow up required for providers, patients, and contacts.

Knowledge of cultural, social norms and the values of diverse populations to ensure cultural diversity when working with clients across the spectrum.

Knowledge of state and federal government policies and procedures, HIPAA, and other relevant statutes and the ability to apply them to relevant work assignments.

Strong verbal and interpersonal skills to obtain accurate information regarding disease related information, diagnosis and treatment history among patients and health care providers.

Ability to draw clients and patients successfully with 90% accuracy using medically approved phlebotomy techniques.

Proficient use of computers and basic software used in the work environment, including Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint.

Strong public speaking skills, with presentations in both small and large group settings.

Excellent written communication skills required for state and federal reports, press releases, policies, procedures and client/provider communication as necessary.

Provide leadership and model professional behavior by setting work priorities; communicate appropriately with patient and health care providers, managing paperwork requirements and engaging in a team environment with coworkers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree (typically in Epidemiology) PLUS Experience: 0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Epidemiology). OR Education & Experience Substitution: 4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Epidemiology). Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: None

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, driving an automobile, etc.

Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
