FACILITIES – Field Engineer

General Responsibilities:

Terracon is seeking a Building Enclosure Consultant for our Facilities Services Division. Candidate shall have a degree in engineering or building sciences. This intermediate engineering position is for the individual who takes an increasingly responsible role in the management of projects. The employee independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria on moderately complex projects. Expected to attract and develop clients to company in area of expertise. Assists in establishing the required technical policy, procedures and developing new markets in professional services for the firm. Candidate shall provide building diagnostics services, building enclosure/roof consulting, and assists in building condition assessments. Must be able to manage a team performing building envelope, roofing and waterproofing evaluations, forensic investigations, destructive and non-destructive testing, remedial design, ASTM and AAMA testing, project management and quality control.

Plans, schedules, conducts, and/or coordinates detailed phases of assigned project work. Works closely with senior-level Project Managers to gain project management experience. Makes design recommendations, adaptations, and modifications. Performs calculations using engineering formulas and skills. Completes own design work using computer-aided techniques. Prepares reports and correspondence concerning the direction of assigned projects. Serves as technical advisor to junior-level project team members. May devise new approaches to problems encountered. Participates in marketing, sales and business development efforts.

Essential Role and Responsibilities:

  • Independently performs a variety of assignments requiring the application of standard engineering techniques for a small project or selected segments of a larger project.
  • Implements technical requirements to complete client projects by directing and supervising field staff to sample, test, and collect data and/or document on-site activities at various client sites.
  • Evaluates complex laboratory and field data and assembles in written reports. May direct field staff on projects.
  • In accordance with company procedures, approves or prepares reports for relatively complex projects, making appropriate recommendations as necessary on both small and large projects.
  • Publishes technical articles, presents technical papers and training seminars to appropriate technical groups to promote the professional image and reputation of the company.
  • Responsible for developing written proposals to client for both small and large projects, including quality control review by senior staff of proposals written by candidate.
  • Identifies potential clients in need of their expertise and in turn sells the services of company to those clients. Provide business development with new and existing clients. Leverage existing client relationships from Terracon’s other service lines: environmental consulting, geotechnical consulting and materials consulting.
  • Participates in the development of marketing strategies and formal presentations of qualification to clients on various projects in area of expertise.

Essential Skills/Abilities:

  • The candidate must be capable of exercising independent judgment in evaluation, selecting, and applying standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to make minor adaptations and modifications. Assignments have clear and specific objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare reports using Microsoft Office.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Overnight travel will be required with this position.

Education/Experience:

Ph.D. degree in Engineering, with at least 2 years of demonstrated consulting experience in field of expertise or

MS degree in Engineering, with at least 4 years of demonstrated consulting experience in field of expertise, or

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, with at least 6 years of experience in field of expertise.

License/Registration:

  • Valid driver’s license (unless arrangements have been made with approval of Division Manager and Corporate)
  • Registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is required. Professional Engineer registration is preferred.
  • Registration Roof Observer (RRO) is required. Registered Roof Consultant (RRC) is preferred.
