Director of Communication

POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Develops and implements an effective strategic communication program and builds the community’s

understanding of the YMCA’s cause and impact.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Responsible for strengthening the image, brand awareness and understanding of the Valley of the Sun YMCA with internal and external audiences.

2. Develops internal and external key messages creating strategies that insure understanding of the mission and alignment at all levels

3. In collaboration with the president and chief development officer, develops a comprehensive board engagement plan preparing volunteers and staff to be ambassadors and advocates of the Y

4. In accordance with executive and financial development leadership, develops annual operating goals, objectives and plan for a strategic communication program. Monitors the achievement of this plan, develops metrics to define success and takes appropriate

action to ensure that the goals and objectives are met.

5. Develops, produces and distributes collateral materials for the executive and development office including board presentations, board and executive communication, fundraising solicitations, donor event materials and scripts, fundraising campaign materials

and other communication tools necessary to raise and steward philanthropic gifts and promote the Y’s image.

6. Collaborates with Y’s public relations firm and marketing team, as needed.

7. Develops, monitors and administers assigned annual budget and maintains a positive fiscal position.

8. Develops effective working relationships with board and staff, community organizations and companies as needed.

9. Provides and maintains related statistics and reports.

10. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Previous professional experience in not for profit communication, marketing and/or public relations.

3. Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software.

4. Excellent interpersonal, writing and communication skills, with demonstrated ability in executive communications for internal and external audiences.

5. Preferred experience creating content for fundraising campaigns and /or donor communication.
