Summary of Work

Study subsurface geologic units in the North Dakota portion of the Williston Basin using wireline logs, oil well cuttings, and cores. Requires strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to represent the Geological Survey to the public, industry and other agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in geology. Preference given for oil industry-related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A broad background in subsurface geology, emphasis on sedimentary geology and stratigraphy.
  • Experience with wireline log interpretation preferred
  • Ability to conduct studies and to prepare geologic maps
  • familiarity with oil well core descriptions
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential
  • Ability to prepare technical reports of geologic studies for industry, government, and the public and for publication in technical journals
  • Individual should be self-motivated
  • Knowledge of PETRA or related subsurface database and mapping software is desired
  • Computer experience with working knowledge of MS Office applications (Access, Excel, Outlook, Word)
  • Applicant must have a valid drivers license
