Student Activities Coordinator

The Student Life and Leadership department seeks a dynamic individual to lead the Student Activities program, in conjunction with Commuter Programs. Student Life and Leadership plays a major role in creating new opportunities for students to learn and practice elements of leadership. Our programs encompass civic responsibility, community development, and social engagement.

The Student Activities Coordinator provides the foundation for on-going UAA co-curricular programs and works with student staff (in conjunction with Commuter Programs) to provide diverse programming to UAA students and campus community. A successful coordinator must be passionate about teaching, training, supervising, and motivating student staff. The coordinator must have an interest in entertainment, arts, and cultural programming. The successful individual must maintain a professional standard for all event productions, have the ability to problem-solve under pressure, and professionally manage unexpected circumstances such as equipment failures, travel delays or cancellations, and audience emergencies. The coordinator must be a professional representative of UAA to students and campus community, and to a wide range of professional and business organizations both in Alaska and throughout the nation. The coordinator must also be available to work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends, and extended hours.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Coordinator-level decision making and problem-solving. Advanced skills in event production and management, risk management, and program assessment. Advanced organizational skills. Advanced skills in marketing and promotion. Budget management skills, including experience in budget development and oversight. Extensive knowledge of student development theory, including leadership development. Experience with student staff supervision. Ability to initiate and lead the development of new and different programs for student engagement. Formal presentation and public communication/outreach skills. Ability to work flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends, and extended hours.

Required Experience: Professional level experience with progressive responsibility beyond a bachelor’s degree in working with student activities programming, community development programs or related programs. Experience programming for a diverse population required.

Typical Education or Training: Bachelor’s degree required and knowledge of student development theories. Master’s degree in College Student Personnel or related field preferred. Qualifying earned degrees must be from post-secondary institutions that have regional accreditation recognized by the US Department of Education and/or the Council of Higher Education Accreditation.

Regular Position, Full Time, 12 Months per year.

Minimum salary: 2,065.60 biweekly.

10 Budget: Budget management and signature authority for Student Activities in conjunction with Commuter Programs Coordinator and director. Manage resources to ensure successful and consistent delivery of programs and services. Essential

20 Supervision and Leadership Development: Hire, train, supervise, direct, motivate, and evaluate up to 20 student employees (Student Activities and Commuter Programs) to assist in the coordination and delivery of programs, activities, and events for the entire campus community. Provide training in leadership and event production. Utilize leadership development models in training and mentoring student leaders. Work in conjunction with the Commuter Programs Coordinator to train and supervise student employees. Essential

25 Event production: In compliance with University regulations, negotiate performance dates, contracts and itineraries; direct marketing and promotions; coordinate event logistics including production, technical requirements, and facilities operations; manage ticket sales and cash handling at events; when appropriate, coordinate ticketing with UAA Tix. Establish and maintain relationships with entertainment agents. Support delivery of major campus traditional events such as Campus Kick-Off, Homecoming, MLK Student Appreciation program, and WinterFest. 35 Program administration and development: provide vision and direction to a broad range of cultural, social, and recreational programming that will facilitate student engagement, a sense of campus community, develop school spirit, and enhance student success in locations all across campus. Primary responsibility is to work with the programming student team to develop and present programs for social interaction and student participation, coordinate the Student Union Art Gallery, and co-supervise the student graphics team. The student team presents weekly entertainment to include music, comedians, speakers, novelty acts, movies, and other opportunities for student engagement. The Gallery staff coordinates 4-5 art exhibits each semester. Coordinator applies relevant research and theories in program development and ensures programming is appropriate for a diverse campus, with a mixture of both traditional and non-traditional students. 5 Assessment: Develop comprehensive, on-going assessment of programs, student needs and preferences. Compile and distribute statistical information and reports. Utilize assessment data to help determine programming. Essential
