Senior Data Center Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Data Center Specialist will be responsible for the monitoring, testing, capacity planning, preventive maintenance and repair of data center equipment and associated electrical, alarming and monitoring systems per vendor specifications at our enterprise data centers. For 3 rd party data centers the role will partner with the local vendor to provide these services. The role will review colocation billing on a monthly basis to ensure compliance with vendor contracts. The role will also review usage audit reports on a monthly basis to ensure all purchased services are being adequately utilized. They will partner with peer engineering teams on process, standards, and configuration management.

The Core responsibilities for this role are: Strategy (5%):
Design, implement, and support data center systems to support critical infrastructure including power, cooling and rack space

Responsible for ensuring maximum uptime of datacenter hardware and peripheral equipment

Provide capacity planning for critical data center systems

Work with architects, solution leads and management to engineer enhancements and optimize systems

Mentor and coach others

Design and implement a preventive maintenance program Execution (85%):

Monitor environmental systems at all enterprise data center locations

Review and analyze monthly colocation invoices to ensure proper billing and utilization of services

Maintain knowledge of vendor technical solutions in the storage and backup space

Participate on project team as a technical resource

Ensure critical data center systems are properly serviced and maintained

Maintain diagrams of data center facilities to facilitate design and engineering discussions

Management of 3 rd party data centers and server rooms

Responsible for ensuring proper deployment of new data center systems including power and cooling Building Capabilities (10%):

Manage the full lifecycle and maintain currency of all enterprise data centers

Build and maintain data center systems that are stable, secure, scalable, and cost effective

Maintain accurate detailed system and environment documentation for areas of responsibility

Identify opportunities for improvements in efficiency and responsiveness, make recommendations and implement efficiencies as necessary

Provide quick and timely updates to work tickets, incidents and outages REQUIRED SKILLS

Understanding of the mechanical, electrical, cabling, and fire life safety systems used in a data center environment including, but not limited to, electrical distribution and layout, transformers, transfer switches, generators, UPS systems and pre-action sprinkler systems.

Ability to analyze data center service contracts and provide feedback on billing in relation to such contracts.

Familiarity with data trending / tracking and analysis and the ability to utilize a PC based integrated critical monitoring systems

Ability to communicate effectively with customers and internal staff.

Ability to coordinate, supervise, and communicate with contractors who perform maintenance or upgrade work on these systems.

Ability to learn quickly and address issues as they arise during normal working hours or after hours.

Ability to operate in and promote a rigorous process-driven team environment

Ability to logically analyze and solve problems

Ability to effectively multi-task multiple projects

Strong knowledge of data center systems management and design concepts

Ability to easily bridge conversations between technical and non-technical teams, translating business requirements into technical solutions

Ability to serve as a technical resource for infrastructure and other projects

Ability to troubleshoot and help solve problems

Excellent verbal/written communication skills, strong attention to detail

Ability to analyze and solve problems, thinks outside of the box and grasps technical concepts

Strong team player who is able to work across multiple functions and disciplines

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience

Note: Sufficient and relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the educational requirements

Preferred knowledge:
Enterprise UPS systems such as APC or Liebert

Power technologies including transfer switches and generators

Cloud data center technologies such as AWS and Azure

ITIL v3 foundation certification EXPERIENCE

Experience with data center infrastructure theories, principles and concepts

Good knowledge in design and implementation of data center technologies for cloud

Knowledge of enterprise infrastructure solutions such as Windows, AIX, server virtualization, IBM, Linux/Unix, Cisco, Palo Alto,

Working knowledge of managing AWS and Azure data center solutions

Familiarity with disaster recovery and high availability architectures

Analytical and trouble shooting skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

A methodical and solid background in planning and completing of complex tasks

Experience using ITIL or other best practice methodology TRAVEL
