This is a full-time position.

NCAR – Computational & Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) – Operations & Services Division (OSD) – Enterprise Services Section (ESS) – Security Engineering Group (SEG)

Partial relocation costs paid per UCAR’s relocation policy.

U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or other protected status under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) is required for this position. UCAR/NCAR will not sponsor a work visa (e.g., J-1, H1-B, etc.) for this position.

Where You Will Work

Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is one of the world’s premier scientific institutions, with an internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to advancing knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity in the atmospheric and related sciences.

This position will be primary located at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Frequent travel to NCAR’s laboratory facilities in Boulder, CO will be required.

What You Will Do

NCAR is hiring a Security Engineer I whom will be a member of the UCAR Security Engineering Group (SEG), working with other Security Engineers and members of the Enterprise Services Section (ESS) and Cheyenne Administration Support Group (CASG) infrastructure teams, as well as appropriate individuals institution-wide, to provide safe, secure solutions for protecting computational resources. Participates in institutional trust relationships with peer institutions and organizations, including (but not limited to) InCommon and XSEDE, as well as any other appropriate peer labs and international standards organizations. Supports UCAR compliance, virtualization, and public and private cloud efforts as appropriate.

  • Support day-to-day ESS operations as a member of the infrastructure team. Participate in Agile/Scrum process under guidance of team lead/scrum master. Work as a part of the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) as part of the Agile/Scrum process. Provide input on planning of initiatives, projects and tasks. Help to maintain secure virtual containers, cloud solutions and other infrastructure.
  • Work within the context of the Computer Security Advisory Committee (CSAC) to contribute to state-of-the-art security designs and documentation that result in a cohesive security profile for NCAR/UCAR. Engage with NCAR/UCAR systems administrations staff as appropriate to promote secure data practices. Carry out SEG tasks such as account and credential management as needed.
  • Perform monitoring of NCAR/UCAR audit data for threats and vulnerabilities, notify senior security staff and work with them to implement recommended courses of action.
  • Consult with broader NCAR/UCAR staff relevant to deployment of virtual machine infrastructure, private and public cloud solutions.
  • Research and advise on new products as a part of the procurement process. Provide security assessments as requested for input into a comprehensive risk management based security plan for NCAR/UCAR.
  • Assist senior engineers with testing and installation of components. Help to complete integration with existing equipment and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) and open source software. Use scripting knowledge to modify open source or internally developed source codes as required.
  • Perform light systems administration duties as needed to support SEG efforts or as backup for systems administrators located at NWSC.

What You Need

  • Associate’s degree in computer science, network engineering or related discipline and 3-4 years of experience in an information security or systems administration related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least one year of engineering experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to react to high pressure, dynamic changing environments.
  • Ability to advise both technical and non-technical individuals on security and technical concepts.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong desire to learn and expand knowledge of security concepts.
  • Ability with Unix/Linux systems administration.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to conferences or classes infrequently.
  • Willingness and ability to occasionally work outside of normal business hours for maintenance or emergency response.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly between Cheyenne, WY and Boulder, CO.
  • Travel for this position is approximately 10-15% per year.

Desired Skills

  • Security + or similar security certification.
  • Familiarity with FISMA and/or FED-RAMP requirements and process.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Active Directory.
  • Familiarity with firewall and VPN technologies.
