Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science or equivalent, or a combination of education and work experience to equal four years.

Preferred:

  • Preferred experience greater than 6 months to 1 year experience working in biology laboratory
  • Experience using a microscope, working with antibodies and nucleic acid in situ hybridization techniques

Job description:
Our laboratories are focused on the neurobiology/neuropathology and pathogenic mechanisms involved in aging and a variety of illnesses, particularly neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lewy body disease, Parkinson’s disease, age-related macular degeneration and chronic diseases affecting the brain and the retina. He/she reports to PIs of the labs.

Responsibilities

1. Prepares slides of specimens using specified stain to enhance visibility under microscope.

2. Prepares tissue sections for immediate examination using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain tissue. Fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax tissue specimens to be preserved for study.

3. Follows laboratory protocols and procedures in the performance of routine and immunohistochemical stains to support laboratory activities.

4. Prepare media, chemicals, reagents and solutions.

5. Performs and troubleshoots quality control.

6. Operates and maintains laboratory instruments, equipment.

7. Able to perform basic troubleshooting on instrumentation to maintain working protocols and a safe working environment.

8. Provides assistance in ordering reagents, equipment and following up on equipment maintenance.

9. Participates in training of students and new members of the laboratory staff in lab assays and testing procedures as needed.

10. Assists in appropriate inventory control and practices cost containment to ensure the availability of supplies and services consistent with quality and budgetary requirements.

11. Performs special assignments and open to learning how to perform brain, tissue and biofluid banking procedures and other duties as requested or required.
