Research Associate 2 – CCS HP Computing

The Research Associate (RA) will be involved in collaborations focused on big data techniques and big data processing concepts while working on one of the largest Big Data clusters in South Florida. The RA regularly interacts with the Center’s research staff as well as other University researchers in an interdisciplinary environment.

Job Duties (summary of the duties and responsibilities of the job listed in order of priority)

•The RA will collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment, providing computational analyses while interacting with UM researchers

•The RA will work with acoustic data acquisition system utilizing MEMs and Electet Microphones

•The RA will work closely with the School of Communication programming and engineering.

•The RA will work on data streaming and ETL tools like Flume and Kettle from acoustic data

•The RA will provide analysis of acoustic data using analytical tools like Spark, R, Python

•The RA will use big data techniques with data provided by the Advanced Computing Sensor Project

•The RA will contribute to the results sections of papers destined to publication in high-quality journals.

•The RA will perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Experience & Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Music Engineering, or related field. Minimum two years’ experience with data analysis and software tool development or related field.

Knowledge/Skills:

A successful candidate will have a proficiency in R programming, Python, and Java, as well as experience using a UNIX high performance computing environment. Specific data science skills such as data management and manipulation, data mining, and statistical modeling are required. The candidate should have an interest in helping the development of data science algorithms for impact in research for both business and scientific communities. An interest in obtaining skills and expertise in developing big data technologies is also a plus. The candidate should have an ability and eagerness to keep up with changing technology and new applications. Strong team work ethics are desirable. The successful candidate will work with researchers at all levels with varied computer proficiencies, thus excellent interpersonal communication skills are required. The successful candidate will have access to a highly dynamic and stimulating working environment and state-of-the-art research facilities.
