RSMAS – Senior Research Associate II

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) invites applications for a Senior Research Associate II position. The research will involve close collaboration with scientists at RSMAS and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC), Fisheries Statistics Division located on Virginia Key.

The incumbent will work in the Fisheries Monitoring Branch of the Fishery Statistics Division. The incumbent will document the current process used to produce fishery dependent estimates of catch and other metrics associated with fishing. The incumbent will standardize and automate the process of deriving estimates catch from self-reported vessel discard data, observer data, and other data collection programs. The incumbent will also analyze catch estimates and other metrics associated with fishing and compare the results from self-reported data sources with other sources. The incumbent will work in collaboration with staff from other SEFSC laboratories and the Southeast Regional Office (SERO).

Qualifications:

  • Must have a Master’s degree or higher in fisheries biology, marine science, mathematics, environmental science or related fields.
  • At least one year of relevant work related experience with evidence of contributions to the dissemination of new research information.
  • Necessary skills include extensive knowledge of database management systems (Access, Oracle) and proficiency in R or SQL coding.
  • Must also have a general understanding of statistical analyses.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail and an interest and ability to learn new software.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills in order to communicate with a diverse group of people in large collaborative projects.
