Major responsibilities of W-10 Weapon Response Analysts include developing weapon response information, coordinating with SMEs to develop information, writing documentation, provide briefings on weapon response, interfacing with production engineering, hazard analysis teams, production technicians, and authorization basis analysts to support development and communication of the weapon response information. W-10 Weapon Response Analysts represents LANL’s position on our components, systems, sub-systems and assemblies. They interface with internal LANL SME’s and system owners to best represent the position of the institution in terms of safety, vulnerabilities and potential mitigation actions to protect the function and ensure the safety of our weapons. W-10 analysts consult with external laboratories including Livermore and Sandia to ensure all hazard scenarios are considered within the weapon.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Comply with the requirements of the LANL Weapon Response Process (W-SE-0023U), DOE-NA-STD-3016, Hazard Analysis Reports for Nuclear Explosive Operations and U.S. Code of Federal Regulations 10 CFR 830, Nuclear Safety Management (Subpart A – Quality Assurance Requirements; Subpart B – Safety Basis Requirements).

  • Work effectively as an R&D Engineer 2 with other LANL Weapon Response Analysts and technical professionals.

  • Work effectively with counterparts at Sandia National Laboratories, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory., Pantex and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) personnel.

  • Produce high-quality deliverables (e.g., WR Technical Basis documents, WR Summary Documents, and technical reports) on schedule

  • Accommodate the need for moderate travel.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Effective technical writing, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to effectively interact with peers, management, stakeholders and customers.

  • Demonstrated experience in presenting technical information to a non-technical audience in an understandable format, as well as to technical professionals in appropriate detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and organize assignments; to identify, address, and resolve technical problems; and to use a systematic approach in solving problems.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and completeness throughout assignment execution to ensure planned results are achieved.

  • Demonstrated experience working independently with limited supervision, as well as effectively as part of a team in a multi-discipline environment.

  • Understanding of the LANL Weapons program and the US Nuclear Weapons Enterprise.

  • Familiarity with weapon response activities and have an understanding of NNSA nuclear explosive operational activities (e.g., Pantex Plant nuclear explosive operations and NNSA over-the-road transportation of nuclear explosives).

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in formal hazard analysis and safety basis processes.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of LANL weapon systems, subsystems and components.

  • Familiarity with high explosives and a technical understanding of high explosives safety.

  • Ability to perform research, analysis and testing to generate suitable solutions; and effectively document and communicate results.

  • Experience interacting with and presenting to LANL peers and management and NNSA.

  • Demonstrated experience with the engineering authorization system and document management systems (e.g., PDMLink) and their application to stockpile maintenance.

  • Derivative Classification (DC) experience.

  • Current and active Q-Clearance (highly desirable)

Education: A minimum of a BS in engineering from an Accredited Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program is required; advanced degree in engineering (ME, EE, ChemE) preferred.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, § 712.11. These requirements include ongoing drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

Located in the beautiful mountains of northern New Mexico, near Santa Fe, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

The Weapon Systems Engineering Division (W) provides the system engineering and program management necessary to sustain the safety, reliability, and security of the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s assets in the active United States nuclear stockpile – the B61, W76, W78 and W88.

W-10 supports the overarching line and programmatic goals of the Nuclear Weapons Program in four functional areas. 1) We contribute to ensuring nuclear weapon safety certification by continually evaluating and updating LANL’s nuclear detonation safety analysis and technical basis; 2) Provide nuclear explosive safety expertise to W Division and the Nuclear Security Enterprise, and participate in the performance of nuclear explosive safety assessments of nuclear explosive operations; 3) It develops weapon response information which is used to facilitate characterization of risk in nuclear explosive operations and identification and development of appropriate risk mitigating controls; and 4) Provide military liaison support for all LANL nuclear weapon systems and the United Kingdom Trident Program.
