This position will be filled at either the Facility Engineering Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate . Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Facility Engineering Technologist 1 ($69,500 – $113,300)

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Configuration management support

  • Modification definition and control

  • Implementation of the authorization basis

  • Technical baseline maintenance

  • Monitoring, tracking, and trending of major systems

  • Definition of maintenance requirements

  • Troubleshooting; root cause analysis

  • Preparation of detailed corrective maintenance instructions for complex or critical operations

  • Engineered equivalency analysis

  • Provides field implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program

Facility Engineering Technologist 2 ($76,800 – $125,600)

Additional job requirements for Facility Engineering Technologist (Engineering Technologist 2). In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Facility Engineering Technologist 2 level requires experience with:

  • Demonstrated technical experience in design engineering and system engineering for nuclear or industrial facility operations

  • Demonstrated working experience in engineering including design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance

  • Demonstrated experience working with industry standards

  • Five years of directly relevant experience

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Entry level relevant experience, training or education

  • Ability to work with policies/procedures to complete assignments

  • Knowledge of technical principles, theories and concepts

  • Design Drafter experience

  • Proficiency with personal computers

  • Develop solutions to routine technical problems of a limited scope

  • Ability to communicate well, both written and verbally

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated sound knowledge of DOE standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance is preferred

  • CMMS Entry

  • Familiarity with TA55 labeling DI and CoE CM process

  • P & ID experience

Education: Requires BS degree in engineering technology or related science; or completion of 80 semester credit hours (engineering, engineering technology or related science program) may be substituted for baccalaureate requirement. Related experience may substitute for education at the rate of six semester credit hours for each year of experience up to a maximum of 60 credit hours. Two years related work experience and one year of nuclear experience are also required. Refer to DOE O 426.2.

Additional Details:

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Where You Will Work

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is primarily responsible for monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting research into new defense programs. It is a center for research in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including space exploration, geophysics, renewable energy, supercomputing, medicine, and nanotechnology.

Engineering Services (ES) Division of LANL develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory’s scientific and national security mission. The Facility Engineer position within ES Division is assigned to the Facility System Engineering & Management (ES-FE) Group responsible for plant engineering services and the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) program implementation at LANL. The CoE program elements including processes, standards, training, and qualification are generally applicable throughout the life cycle of a facility. They exist to effectively manage risks and satisfy customer requirements, needs, and expectations in a safe, secure, cost effective, and environmentally responsible manner.
