Position Summary

Rice 360: Institute for Global Health seeks an entrepreneurial and highly engaged Executive Director who will work together with the Institute faculty to carry out the mission and overall goals of Rice 360. Rice 360 develops effective, low-cost health solutions that address critical public health needs in low-resource communities. Working closely with partners throughout the world and the private sector, Rice 360 creates sustainable global health solutions for resource-poor communities around the world.

The Executive Director manages the strategic, programmatic and financial operations of Rice 360. The Executive Director supports the overall mission and vision for Rice 360, advancing the organization’s strategies and directives while expanding its impact to reduce global health disparities. The Executive Director creates and implements highly targeted, effective programs while overseeing and managing the organization’s budget and resources. The Executive Director serves as a key liaison with internal and external partners, assisting in nurturing relationships for continued and expanded support of Rice 360 programs; and identifying, qualifying and developing potential funding sources and opportunities that may help bring additional research funding to Rice 360 and the broader Rice community.

Skills Required

– Experience working with technology development, deployment, and evaluation in low-resource settings; experience managing international projects and partnerships, preferably in at least sub-Saharan Africa; experience developing and evaluating proposals in global health. Familiarity with the Institute’s research focus, and the associated global health and development issues of newborn, child and women’s health.

– Understand the broad global health landscape from research through implementation and key issues with the ability to recognize emerging issues, assess opportunities and coordinate a response. Global health field experience highly desirable.

– Good communication skills in both technical and global health subjects; ability to describe mission of institute and research accomplishments of Rice 360 to scientists and engineers in other disciplines and to the public at large. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to interact with faculty, students, staff, university administration and the public relations office. A passion for scientific advances and low cost healthcare technologies.

Internal: Rice collaborators and various departments on campus, university upper administration and Faculty Steering Committee.

External: The Executive Director establishes and fosters collaborations between Rice 360 and other universities, hospitals and partners with whom Rice 360 collaborates. The Executive Director must work closely with the Institute’s Malawi Country Director, Malawi government officials and officials in hospitals and universities in Malawi to implement programs in Malawi to fulfill its mission. Board Members, Board of Directors and donors.

Physical Demands

Typical office setting when working in Houston. Will require long airline flights to Africa and other international locations.

Working Conditions

Will travel at least 10% of the time to Malawi and other international and domestic low-resource settings.
