Description of Duties/Essential Functions

Houston Public Library (HPL) is a seeking energetic, flexible, team-oriented person with a passion for customer service to work as Customer Service Clerk with an international services focus in our neighborhood libraries. Successful candidates will communicate effectively, provide exceptional customer service, enjoy working with, learning, and teaching new and emerging technologies, be at ease multitasking in a fast-paced public service setting and enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds.

The Customer Service Clerk (International) will:

  • Enjoy working with a culturally diverse community and apply an energetic and enthusiastic approach to attracting newcomers to the Houston Public Library;
  • Lead and coordinate English classes (ESOL), Citizenship classes, adult literacy classes and Passport service assistance;
  • Play an active role in connecting underserved populations to library and community resources and opportunities;
  • Assist with planning and implementing special events;
  • Greet and interact with customers at the customer service desk to find basic information and library materials;
  • Facilitate the use of the public computers and laptops, and troubleshooting technology-related issues;
  • Provide information regarding library services, programs, policies, and procedures;
  • Retrieve library materials for customers and shelving returned materials;
  • Collect fines and fees using computer-based software; and
  • Work one evening a week and every other weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday).

HPL serves a population of 2.2 million citizens through a network of 37 Neighborhood Libraries spread out across the Houston area.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six (6) months of clerical / customer service experience are required

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
None.

PREFERENCES

Preference will be given to those who have:

  • Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others;
  • Ability to build positive relationships with community partners; and
  • To better serve our diverse communities, fluency in a foreign language and/or experience providing ESL instruction is highly preferred.
