Transportation/Fingerprint Office Specialist

The Office of Student Services (OSS) is responsible to ensure the free appropriate public education for all children with disabilities in Oregon, birth through age 21, and assures that the education of these children is a vital element of Education Reform activities. The Office maintains educational services to students who are incarcerated in local, regional, and state correctional facilities. The Office maintains and directs the Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD). This Office provides technical assistance to school districts and regional programs; leads in program development and improvement of services; works cooperatively with educators and parents to improve the achievement of students with diverse learning needs; contracts for provision of state operated programs and services locally; monitors districts for compliance with state and federal law; and monitors educational services for children and youth with disabilities.

We are recruiting for one permanent, full-time Office Specialist 2. This position is located in S alem, Oregon , and is classified and represented by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) .

This position’s primary responsibilities are to provide a variety of administrative job functions to the Pupil Transportation and Fingerprinting team that contribute to the success of the programs.

To qualify for this position, you must have two years of general clerical experience, one year of which included typing, word processing, or other experience generating documents; OR an Associate’s degree in Office Occupations or Office Technology; OR graduation from a private school of business with a Certificate in Office Occupations or Office Technology and one year of general clerical experience. College courses in Office Occupations or Office Technology will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

We are looking for candidates with the following skills:
Diplomacy in dealing with people, particularly the public and other agencies. Secretarial experience and experience in dealing with public and school administrators. Needs working knowledge of word processing, databases, and other office equipment.

Ability to work with confidential materials concerning personnel and other administrative decisions within the section, with ESDs, and with public and private schools.

Obtain Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) certification from Oregon State Police.

Typing Speed minimum of 50 wpm.

Experience organizing and prioritizing a high volume of work.

Experience remaining productive and taking initiative for tasks with little direction from others.

Experience accomplishing work that may be repetitive with a positive, team oriented and professional approach.

Preference may be given to applicants with a current and valid Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) certification.

The working conditions for this position include frequent, extended periods of sitting/standing at a computer terminal performing data entry; retrieving and returning files to large five drawer file cabinets; frequent telephone and in-person contact with school district, contractors, school administrators, business officials, department employees, employees of other state and federal agencies, and occasionally irate individuals; keeping information confidential.
