Sr. Accountant, Society Subsidiaries

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) is a not-for-profit membership organization that promotes the science of applied geophysics and the education of geophysicists. Founded in 1930, it is one of the premier membership organizations in the world dedicated to the scientific exploration for and development of natural resources. The headquarters office is located in south Tulsa in a class A office building on the Geophysical Resources campus. This position oversee all financial activity for assigned SEG subsidiaries to ensure transactions are recorded and reported in an accurate and timely manner. It also requires working directly with investment managers, staff and volunteers to ensure the financial health of the assigned SEG companies and proper accounting for donor agreements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare and process necessary financial transactions in the accounting system to record financial activity and status in an accurate manner to ensure timely completion of month- and year-end closing cycles for the assigned SEG subsidiaries. This includes all financial statements, investment reports and forecasts and variance analysis.

  • Work directly with investment managers and SEG staff to ensure all donations and related expenses are tracked and recorded on a timely and accurate basis in the investment accounts and the investment funds reflect the most current investment policy for the SEG.

  • Ensure donor agreements are properly executed from a financial aspect.

  • Prepare annual budgets.

  • Maintain and reconcile all assigned subsidiaries bank accounts, resolving open issues during reconciliation. Reconcile assigned general ledger accounts in compliance with account reconciliation policy.

  • Prepare various federal and state tax returns (includes but not limited to sales, use, property, (990, 1098, 1099, 1042) and registrations required for regulatory compliance and other external and internal uses for assigned subsidiaries.

  • Lead the preparation of audit records including analysis and information gathering for assigned subsidiaries.

  • Respond to ad hoc requests for financial analysis as needed.

Experience Required
Minimum seven years’ experience in general ledger accounting is required to provide the ability to interpret complex accounting principles, federal and state accounting and tax laws, rules and regulations. Experience with 501c3 and endowment accounting preferred.

Education, Certifications and Specialized Training
Bachelor’s degree in accounting required. CPA preferred.

Job-Specific Skills and Knowledge

  • Intermediate ability to interpret complex accounting principals; federal and state accounting and tax laws, rules, regulations; and systems applications.
  • Advanced ability to read and evaluate contracts.
  • Intermediate ability to operate a computer, computer related hardware and MS Office software.
  • Intermediate written and verbal communication skills when interacting with internal and external customers and vendors to explain company policy and accounting procedures.
  • Experience using Solomon and report writer software preferred.
