Software Engineer

The Star Tribune is looking for a Software Engineer who loves to work in fast-paced, agile environments to join our Digital Software Engineering team. The core responsibility for the individual in this role is to work as a member of our Data/Data Science team focused on API development, data flows/architecture, database manipulation, and big data initiatives utilizing AWS based technologies (Redshift, Aurora, Sagemaker, etc).

The Engineering team has a multifaceted role in the Star Tribune’s creation and deployment of new media systems. We work within and alongside a world-class news organization to ensure stability, performance, and continuous improvement. Our overall focus is to build strong software products to bring the best possible experience to the millions of readers of the Star Tribune online, on their phone or where ever they may be looking for news and information about Minnesota.

The person in this role will have the opportunity to work with the various functions of the Star Tribune – News, Advertising, Marketing, Circulation and more. This means doing everything from working on the core content systems that power our news coverage, to working inside a complex advertising marketplace, to engineering commerce systems to support our subscription services.

An ideal candidate for this position would be excited to work in new technologies, have a self-drive to explore and learn and have a strong technical background in web technologies. You will work in a team focused environment with other Software Engineers where there is opportunity for peer code reviews and an open exchange of ideas and philosophies.

Responsibilities:

• Develop internal tools and write custom integrations for various applications and vendor APIs
• Identify and recommend new technologies, both proprietary and open source, that will further benefit our systems and network operations
• Participate in the development of internal tools to improve insight into and operation of our infrastructure
• Work with other teams in the organization to improve developer and designer workflow and communication
• Work with your peers as a subject matter expert on core digital technologies

Requirements:

• At least 2 years of experience in a Software Engineering role
• Prior experience in a scalable software development environment
• Knowledge of Git and code management
• Knowledge of MySQL interactions and administration
• Experience working in an object oriented manner inside of a team environment
• Personal time management and the ability to estimate tasks based on business requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience writing APIs in Python, Node.JS, and/or Go
• Knowledge of in-memory datastores like memcached and Redis
• Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related fields
