Software Engineer

Logistics done differently.

As the Software Engineer, you will apply technical, mathematical, and scientific techniques and knowledge to evaluate software from other sources. Design and implement software components that address specific XPO Logistics business requirements, resulting in systems that achieve quantifiable measures of performance, quality, affordability, maintainability, and simplicity. Develop new, complex software components, and modifications to and support of existing production software. Provide technical support for complex software operating environments deployed by the business.

What you’ll do on a typical day:
Design new software by applying techniques of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis that satisfies the objectives stated in business requirements

Evaluate and select process and logic patterns, programming language constructs, data storage methods, and operating environment interfaces that effectively satisfy business requirements and quantifiable measures

Develop appropriate programs and systems documentation according to established department standards

Collaborate with architects, systems engineers, project managers, systems administrators, and operations analysts to deploy and implement solutions, and troubleshoot technical issues

Deploy and implement fully-tested software solutions

Follow industry best practices, techniques and XPO Logistics standardized processes that deliver improved software solutions

Evaluate identified technologies for inclusion in developed software solutions

Certify the proper functioning and performance of software components using repeatable, reproducible, and reportable software testing methodologies

Support software infrastructure by identifying and diagnosing software failures

Install and upgrade software development tools

Provide 24/7 on-call rotational support of software

What you need to succeed at XPO:At a minimum, you’ll need:
Bachelor’s degree in software engineering or related technical field, or certification in software engineering from ACM or IEEE generally required. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered

Leadership and project management training are beneficial

4 years of experience in software solutions development preferably in medium to large corporate environments or commercial software companies

Knowledge of rapid programming, agile development, software patterning, and refactoring techniques

Knowledge of operating environment technologies (network, server, operating systems, database systems)

Knowledge of Open Source projects

Knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of common programming languages (C, C++, C#, Java, Visual Basic)

Experience with data marshalling, data transformation, and data representation technologies (Single-byte characters, Multi-byte characters, XML, Stylesheets)

Experience with process communication techniques (Shared memory, message queues, Semaphores, mutexes)

Knowledge of concurrent processing models, constructs, and techniques (threaded processes, thread synchronization, apartments, error recovery)

Knowledge of SQL and relational databases (DB2/UDB, Oracle, MySQL)

Knowledge of application-specific technologies (image/graphics processing, character and Symbology recognition, data acquisition, and others specific to business application)

Knowledge of Unix, Java, and Windows architecture and programming interfaces

Experience with the industry standard IDEs – Eclipse, Visual Studio, for Unix, Java, and Windows

It’d be great if you also have:
Strong written and verbal communication skills in technical settings. Well-developed active listening and presentation skills

Solid knowledge of IT software development life cycle methodologies and processes

Basic project management skills. Well-developed time management and prioritization skills

Demonstrated analytical capabilities

Ability to apply understanding of functionality of event-driven business models
