RSMAS-Research Associate II

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami (UM), Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) is seeking qualified applicants for a research position in the area of Physical Oceanography. The work will be done in close collaboration with scientists in the Physical Oceanography Division at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Atmospheric Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML).

The incumbent is expected to work with observational oceanographers and software developers at AOML and at CIMAS. Specifically, the candidate will perform tasks related to the maintenance and improvement of the automatic data processing system used by the US Argo Data Assembly Center to collect, process and distribute the data from profiling floats. The candidate will also be involved in the design, development and maintenance of software in a wide range of programming languages, writing of documentation that facilitates the use and maintenance of operational data processing systems, maintenance and updating of the web pages of the US Argo Data Assembly Center and the South Atlantic Argo Regional Center.

Required qualifications include:

•A Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, oceanography, physics, mathematics or related fields.

•The incumbent must have at least two years of experience in computer programming that were acquired during employment.

•Necessary skills include software design and development for automatic data processing systems, programming in the higher-level languages Java, C, C++ and Fortran, and working on computers with Unix and Linux and Windows operating systems.

•The incumbent must have the skills needed to maintain and update web pages.

•The incumbent must have excellent written and oral communication skills in order to communicate with a diverse group of people in large collaborative projects.
