Job Summary :

The person hired for the position of Project Engineer will work within the 3M EHS Laboratory. The job includes (1) Conducting analytical measurements at 3M manufacturing locations; (2) Analysis of field data to evaluate process operational performance, support emissions reporting and industrial hygiene activities; (3) Laboratory studies to evaluate product EHS performance (4) Project management of in-sourced and out-sourced environmental testing.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducting field measurements of chemical concentrations and process flow rates at 3M manufacturing and R&D locations
  • Conducting industrial hygiene related measurements at 3M R&D and manufacturing locations
  • Conducting laboratory-based measurements of 3M products for emission factor development
  • Nanoparticle and PM¬2.5 aerosol sampling measurements at 3M R&D manufacturing locations
  • Conducting laboratory-based measurements of physical-chemical properties of 3M materials
  • Conducting small and large chamber studies of 3M products
  • Development and maintenance of mobile analytical equipment
  • Analysis of data using statistical software and other technical software platforms
  • Working with the 3M business units to prepare EHS-related test protocols
  • Implementing relevant 3M Environmental Lab and EHS Operations policies and SOPs

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering or Civil Engineering from an accredited university
  • Ability to, on occasion, lift analytical equipment (30 lbs.) during field testing
  • Wear respirator protective equipment during some field tests

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering or Civil Engineering
  • Experience with:
    • Field sampling using real-time analytical equipment and the collection of samples for off-line chemical analysis.
    • Gas-phase Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)
    • Analysis of environmental samples using Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS; LC/MS)
    • Aerosol sampling using SMPS, CPC, and APS equipment
    • Sampling from manufacturing processes
    • Experience with Matlab, Visual Basic, LabView, and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  • Skills include:
    • Effective communications with plant manufacturing personnel, industrial hygiene and safety personnel as well as state and federal regulatory personnel
    • Adherence to safety practices at industrial manufacturing facilities

Location: Maplewood, MN

Travel: May include up to 50% domestic/international

Relocation: Is authorized
