Payroll Accountant

Simon Contractors Company is seeking a qualified Payroll Accountant . This position is located in our corporate offices in Cheyenne, Wyoming and reports to the Payroll Supervisor. We are a strong, stable and growing organization with the flexibility of being a multi-state contractor while enjoying the benefit of being part of a larger national family of construction companies.

The ideal candidate will have had prior experience in in-house electronic payroll systems, have experience maintaining payroll-related accounts and records, as well as be knowledgeable in Microsoft Office & payroll systems.

Position Description

The primary responsibility of the position is payroll-related, leave and benefit records administration; in which the incumbent’s primary responsibility is payroll taxes and payroll accounting, back up for handling the salaried/exempt/administrative payroll.

Essential Duties and Functional Responsibilities

  • Compile payroll data such as hours worked, taxes, insurance, and 401k to be withheld, and employee identification number from time sheets and other records.
  • Enter data into computer files, or compute wages, and deductions and post to payroll records.
  • Review wages computed and correct errors to ensure accuracy of payroll.
  • Report, to the Payroll Supervisor changes affecting net wages such as exemptions, insurance coverage, loan payments, 401k, and transfers or terminations for each employee to update master payroll records.
  • Prorate expenses to be debited or credited to each department for cost accounting records.
  • Prepare periodic reports of earnings, taxes, and deductions.
  • Keep records of leave pay and nontaxable wages.
  • Prepare and issue paychecks.
  • Provide information to employees and managers on payroll matters and tax issues.
  • Keep informed about changes in tax and deduction laws that apply to payroll processes.
  • Process involuntary deductions such as levies and garnishments to the Payroll Manager.
  • Process paperwork for new employees to the Payroll Manager and HR Department.
  • Prepare and balance period-end reports.
  • Complete, verify, and process forms and documentation for administration of benefits such as pension plans, unemployment, and medical insurance to the Payroll Administrator and HR Department.
  • Record and track equipment time for entry into computer system,
  • Completes of ensures completion of Personnel Action Forms for changes to employees (i.e. employment status, job title, wage/salary, etc.) Process forms to Payroll Manager & HR Department.
  • Maintains payroll-related accounts and is responsible for the reconciliation and accuracy of one or more accounts within a complex accounting system. Would also be associated with handling salaried/exempt/administrative payroll.
  • Prepares various accounting paper, schedules, exhibits, and summaries.
  • Responsible for all payroll tax activities, including compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and filing local. State, and federal payroll tax returns.
  • May supervise regions in the calculations and reporting of tax liabilities, in responding to questions and special requests from employees and regulatory agencies.
  • Researches law and regulations regarding taxes and payroll withholding procedures and in preparing budgets, projections, and special reports for senior management.
  • Maintains payroll and related records recording the accumulation and use of vacations, holidays, sick days, and miscellaneous leaves of absence.
  • May administer a variety of voluntary deductions such as FSA, Dental, Vision, and Supplemental Life Insurance.

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor s Degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • 3 years in-house electronic payroll experience and prevailing wage experience preferred.
  • FPC or CPP Designation preferred.
  • Experience with JDE preferred.
  • Valid Driver s License and clean driving history.

  • Strong Analytical skills
    • Proven Office 365 experience – Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook
  • Be knowledgeable in Accounting Software, Payroll Systems, Internet Software, and Database Software.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to apply accounting concepts such as debits, credits, reconciliations, discounts, interest, commissions, analysis, etc.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety or technical instructions in mathematical diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variable.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision, Depth perception and Ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Travel may be required (up to 20%) to visit regional offices.
