Motor Vehicle Fraud Investigator

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Investigate instances of driver’s license and motor vehicle fraud such as Title, Odometer, Tax, Motor Vehicle Identification, and other Motor Vehicle Law cases, which includes: Reviewing and investigating complaints, determining if fraud has occurred and making arrests and/or obtaining arrest warrants for violations of criminal statutes of the State of Nebraska. Investigating cases of attempted fraud in the driver license application process discovered during the gated issuance process, including follow through of any other fraud committed as part of the identity theft. Identifying, locating, interviewing, and taking statements from victims, witnesses and persons suspected of involvement in fraudulent activity or have related knowledge to use as evidence in administrative or criminal actions. Collecting, preserving, and recording evidence, and establishing the basis for criminal prosecution. Completing required written investigative reports to accurately reflect facts gathered as a result of an investigation. Preparing reports for presentation to prosecuting attorneys throughout the State of Nebraska for prosecution. Developing and working with informants, conducting surveillance and undercover investigations to identify fraudulent practices. Acting as lead investigator when other law enforcement or State investigative agencies assisting with a DMV case. Assisting other law enforcement officers and State investigative agencies in the investigation of criminal acts relating to DMV Fraud throughout the State of Nebraska. Preparing and testifying at administrative/criminal proceedings as they relate to DMV fraud cases. Monitoring the progress of the case through the judicial system. Authenticating records and documents and collaborating with other law enforcement officials and city and county attorneys and Attorney General in developing criminal cases for prosecution. Works with these same entities to assist in clearing erroneous driving violations and criminal records on behalf of victims’ who have been victims of identity theft. Consulting and working with insurance companies, law enforcement officials, other state agency investigative staff and other entities to facilitate the investigation and to provide documentation of relevant facts. Providing fraudulent document training for vehicle ownership and personal identification documents and identity theft. Attends Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center (NLETC) specialized training courses. Annually meet the NLETC Firearms Qualifications.

Hours: 8-5, Monday – Friday.

Job location is the Nebraska State Office Building, Downtown.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

REQUIREMENTS: Post-secondary education in criminal justice, business or public administration and previous work experience in the motor vehicle industry, law enforcement, or investigative experience in other state, local or private agencies.

PREFERRED: Three to five years in law enforcement or civil investigations, interpreting motor vehicle laws and statutes, authenticating records and documents, investigating identity theft and/or vehicle fraud, taking statements from witnesses and preparing court testimony, creating training material, and training and/or making presentations to groups. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email programs.

OTHER: Law Enforcement Officer certification and a valid driver’s license.
