Mechanical Engineer I

DRS NIS – Mechanical engineering design candidate will become a key member of an integrated product team tasked to develop infrared sensors and related military products. The duties will primarily be associated with the mechanical design and packaging of cryogenically cooled infrared sensors. As part of DRS’ multidiscipline team, the successful candidate will be involved in mechanical concept to detailed design, and will provide hands-on support during integration and testing of products

Basic Qualifications and Required Skills

U.S. Citizenship is required

Proficiency using Pro/E Creo3 (or higher/equivalent)

Excellent grasp of priciples of machine design and heat transfer

Understanding of materials and material properties

Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite of tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Communicate well, both in verbal presentations and written documentation.

Basic working knowledge and understanding of drafting principles

Ability to work in a team environment

Must be a motivated, self-starter

BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering

0 – 4 years experience in a related mechanical design field; college coop/intern experience in a related role is a plus.

Minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA

Desired

Understanding of Design of Experiments and practical problem solving

Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing

Electronics and/or MEMs packaging experience

Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5M-1982 and ASME Y14.5-1994 (or higher)

Structural and Thermal FEA modeling experience

Familiarity with cryogenics, vacuum technology, infrared imaging systems and opto-mechanical design

Failure analysis and analytical skills

Duties and Responsibilities

Transitioning current and future development designs into production

Hands-on involvement with manufacturing and build of designs

Detailed product design and modeling, material selection, structural and thermal analyses

Creating and developing mechanical detailed part and assembly drawings

Support internal design reviews

Define and conduct design verification testing to support risk mitigation of new designs

Coordination with subcontractors and suppliers

Other duties as assigned

Physical Conditions

Lifting – Up to 20 lbs. up to 25% of time
