Junior Software Developer – Countercept

The Countercept development team at MWR (South Africa) is looking for awesome developers who want to help create software to defeat the bad guys.

MWR is developing the next generation of solutions to help protect against all kinds of threats to computer security within organisations and a number of proof of concepts have been written and deployed to clients in this space.

We want talented developers to join us working at every point in the development process to turn this into a full software suite, from capturing and analysing requirements to deploying and supporting the solution. We need people that can work with a variety of technologies, including web and desktop. We highly prefer people that enjoy experimenting with new technologies; after all, perhaps Erlang or Go fits the project requirements better.

Training opportunities and international travel will be available to help improve skills where required. We are seeking someone who is not scared of new challenges and knows how to work hard whilst maintaining a fun and friendly attitude. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a team with a culture of learning and mutual respect; where you can bring new ideas to the table and have them heard.

Main responsibilities – Software development

Countercept is a complete managed service for detection of and response to advanced persistent threats (APT) and cyber-attacks, delivered from our operations centre for 24/7 real-time monitoring of our clients’ assets. Traditional approaches to malware prevention and protection against being hacked, such as anti-virus scanning, are no longer effective these days, so we’ve built a business around staying at the forefront of the cyber arms race. We have an exceptional track record of picking up everything from script kiddies to nation state attackers.

We are pioneering ‘Threat Hunting’ within the industry, a new approach that is fundamentally the only way to be truly effective at stopping hackers in the modern world. While we embrace buzz-words like machine learning and use these techniques as part of our solution, our competitors’ complete reliance on such approaches only serves to prove that they don’t truly get it. As a company we regularly perform red-team (attack) exercises against companies using such defences and it’s shocking how ineffective they can be.
