MS Wealth Management (MSWM) Technology

Morgan Stanley Wealth Management (MSWM) Technology is the global technology department responsible for the design, development, delivery and support of the technical solutions behind the products and services used by the Morgan Stanley Wealth Management (MSWM) business. The department is comprised of 10 organizations: Sales, Banking & Corporate-Client Technology, Investment Products & Markets Technology, Client Reporting, Core Processing, Private and International Wealth Management Technology, Technology Integration Office, Enterprise Infrastructure & Production Management, Capital Markets Application & Data Services, Deployment Planning & Release Management, and the Chief Operating Office. Morgan Stanley Wealth Management (MSWM) Technology works with large scale databases such as DB2 and SQL Server, proprietary and non-proprietary messaging software, a broad variety of vendor products, numerous financial exchanges and regulatory entities, and programming languages ranging from .Net and Java to Cobol and VB.Net.

Position Description

The Movement of Money systems in GBT process transactions annually on behalf of our Morgan Stanley Wealth Management clients. In addition to being essential for all wealth clients to bring monies in and out of the Firm, the MoM program supports initiatives of the Private Banking Group: to increase cash management engaged clients and become the top Digital Bank. Movement of Money projects are generally designed to improve efficiency and usability of core money movement systems which result in time saved by branch employees and lower operational risk for the firm.

Money Movement is a very active platform, with changes, defect fixes, enhancements and projects coming in on a regular basis. We are looking for a candidate to coordinate the Money Movement platform and manage all defects, fixes and changes going in from a project management perspective, but also understand how the systems work from a technical perspective. Ideal candidate will be able to troubleshoot issues in production when they occur, pull in subject matter experts as needed, figure out what the defects are, then coordinate and plan for fixes. This will involve discussions with external vendors and internal development and support teams, taking an unstructured and chaotic process and bringing structure and order while still providing efficiency and keeping the platform stable throughout the numerous changes. Candidate should have hands-on technical skills, preferably development experience; particularly a solid understanding of Software Development Lifecycle is primordial to follow proper process and procedures and provide transparency and traceability. Candidate will lead a small global team between Montreal, New York and India.

o Preferably a coder when necessary, but at least have development experience

  • Strong organizational/communication skills

o Very important requirement!

o Take complex system problems and distill them into succinct summaries digestible by business people and users

o Field multiple simultaneous requests from various stakeholders and work to prioritize them based on technical complexity, business urgency, impact to stability, and other risks

o Take unstructured processes and use tools to structure and manage them while relentlessly striving for efficiency:

  • Keep things out of Excel and Email (inefficient, chaotic) – favor Jira tracking for instance
  • Avoid double-keying
  • Tie into existing processes and standards – deployment, runbooks, etc
  • Keep fastidious records of what was done and what is to be done

o Be able to face off with vendor

  • Negotiate deliveries of fixes
  • Demand accountability and transparency into their RTB processes
  • Negotiate improvements in their processes if necessary, or at least escalate to management
  • Leadership skills

o Lead a global team of 3-4 people focused on RTB fixes

o Rally team and stakeholders to buy into and support processes that they have defined

o Be able to negotiate with business and stakeholders and to defend technology priorities and concerns

o Constantly work to refine processes and inject new ideas and improvements

  • Flexibility (work after office hours might be needed)
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills

o Excellent problem solving skills essential

Technical Skills

  • Experience with backend Java or .Net development
  • Experience with Service-Oriented Architecture (in particular SOAP/REST Web Services)
  • Knowledge of relational databases (DB2)
  • Knowledge of SDLC process
