DATA ENGINEER

Arlington County’s Department of Technology Services (DTS), is seeking a Data Engineer to support the Data Management, Application Development and Data Analytics Program. This senior level programmer will work closely with the Data Architect, Data Analyst, and Application Developer to provide solutions to support the data needs for applications, analysis, and support of the County’s Open Data program initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Writing automated tasks to import data into County’s Data warehouse SQL Server solution (Datahub) from various external and internal sources;
  • Scripting, manipulating and scrubbing data using high level programming language including C#, JavaScript, and/or Python to meet data requirements;
  • Supporting the development group by providing API’s and performing middle-tier application development;
  • Developing API’s to expose data from County’s Data warehouse (Datahub) so that it can be consumed by developers and other systems including the Open Data system;
  • Pushing data to the Open Data platform by using vendor support API’s;
  • Extracting information from GIS layers as needed into the Datahub and presenting information in a structured format to be reused for data analysis;
  • Setting up SPLUNK forwarders to capture and forward data to SPLUNK platform for data analysis purposes; and
  • Exploring unstructured data, NOSQL and big data support.

Selection Criteria:

Minimum Qualifications : Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management, or a related field PLUS considerable years of experience that includes a combination of the following:

  • Understanding of Object Oriented Programming principles (OOP) and Software; Development Lifecycle (SDLC);
  • Working with distributed source control system such as GIT/BitBucket;
  • SQL Server platform;
  • High level programming language such as C#, JavaScript and/or Python;
  • Understanding of data semantics, databases and open data movement; and/or
  • Working against RESTful API’s.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience with one or more of the following:

  • Working with GIS output formats – KMZ and KML;
  • Familiarity with big data tools such as SPLUNK;
  • Working with unstructured and big data;
  • Executing an open data program highly desirable; and/or
  • With local government (or similar organization).

Additional Information:

Work Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
