Application/System Architect

The Application/System Architect will provide expertise, direction, and assistance in application architectural consulting to technical analysts, application engineers, senior database analysts, and other systems architects. This person will work with a variety of State Agency and development team members to promote innovation and platform improvements as well as streamline how we create and deliver applications to our internal customers.

Software engineering level assignment will be determined by the education and experience of the incumbent.

Preferred experience:

  • Enterprise Architecture experience;
  • experience with design, development and deployment of enterprise level components and solutions;
  • experience designing and implementing scalable, high performance enterprise applications for mission critical solutions;
  • experience in Agile methods, software development lifecycle management, continuous integration, build and release management and managed environments;
  • BA/BS Bachelor’s Degree plus 3 years of experience in Software Engineering OR an Associate’s degree plus 5 years’ experience in Software Engineering;
  • experience with creating System Architecture documentation;
  • understanding of security;
  • experienced with agile (Scrum and Extreme Programming) and predictive (waterfall) development practices.

Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based background check before beginning employment. State and federal criminal history records will be identified. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment.

Knowledge of:

  • Enterprise Architecture best practices;
  • integrating a variety of 3rd party systems.

Skill to:

  • develop and maintain the systems architecture for the application portfolio;
  • develop and maintain technology roadmaps, ensuring application roadmaps are aligned with solution and enterprise direction as well as participating in defining new standards when required;
  • assist in guiding the long-term strategic goals and short-term tactical plans in support of Business requirements;
  • communicate with a focus on effectively providing feedback to project teams about deliverables, open issues, and requirements;
  • translate user requirements into effective solution architectures.

Ability to:

  • provide architectural leadership to the BIT Development Division and ensure best practices are created and followed;
  • work with a diverse group of team members and co-workers to achieve awesome things for the State of South Dakota, while maintaining a sense of humor (to go along with your sense of purpose);
  • accurately estimate development time for key deliverables;
  • interact with clients;
  • assists in the identifying of opportunities to implement enterprise platforms and services that will bridge capability gaps.
