What You Will Do
The Accountant is responsible for moderate to complex accounting activities relating to the maintenance of a complete and accurate general ledger and the resultant managerial reports and financial statements. Responsibilities include:

  • Performing moderate to complex accounting functions that include reporting financial information; monitoring and reconciling financial accounts; assessing accuracy; verifying financial documents; maintaining ledgers, accounts, and tables; and coordinating input of financial data in accordance with accounting cycle and generally accepted accounting practices.

  • Acting as a primary liaison to internal and external auditors, serving as the focal point for systems analysis, testing, and tax reporting

  • Leading and mentoring other team members; leading special projects such as process modifications/implementations; and other tasks as assigned by the Group Leader.

  • Participating and/or coordinating daily activities associated with the above functions and ensuring compliance with Laboratory internal controls and Department of Energy accounting requirements and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) .

The incumbent must have strong organizational skills to manage working in a diverse, high volume, environment with multiple deadlines and priorities . In addition the incumbent must be able to work outside a normal schedule as the work requires. Reliability and availability are essential.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of accounting and financial concepts and principles, plus working knowledge of related activities gained through specialized work experience.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with moderately complex accounting and financial analysis; developing, interpreting and applying financial policies and procedures; performing self-assessments; ability to analyze and resolve account discrepancies; ability to design effective reconciliation processes.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in application of GAAP and CAS.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in identifying performance deficiencies, internal management control systems, and development strategies to modify procedures to improve and enhance processes and controls.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively present detailed and complex information and findings in an understandable manner.

  • Demonstrated proficient use of software applications, such as MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Access. Advanced knowledge of Excel a plus.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience leading small projects (planning, resource allocation & decision-making).

  • Proven experience mentoring team members.

  • Knowledge of procurement processes and issues as related to Accounts Payable.

  • Substantial knowledge of Oracle modules such as Accounts Payable, Purchasing, Project Accounting and General Ledger.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Education:

· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration (MBA preferred) and typically five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Division delivers financial products and services in support of the Laboratory’s mission. Our financial management focus includes the following: integrating processes and systems across CFO Division; providing quality business processes and systems throughout the Laboratory; partnering with the programs and technical divisions to strengthen our business capabilities; providing stewardship of Laboratory, Los Alamos National Security (LANS), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and sponsor resources; and building alliances with NNSA, Department of Energy (DOE), Los Alamos Field Office (LAFO), and the Albuquerque Service Center.

The Accountant 2 is a professional level position with the Accounts Payable team in the Disbursements (CFO-DISB) Group. The Accounts Payable Team is responsible for the payment of Purchase Order and contract payments, Integrated Contract orders, DOE Miscellaneous Orders, royalties, guest honoraria and stipends, survivor benefits and miscellaneous employee reimbursements. The team is also responsible for processing Special Payment Memos, which are used for irregular circumstances.
