SUMMARY : The Accountant is knowledgeable in all aspects of and supports the Controller and Chief Operating and Financial Officer in carrying out the responsibilities of the Business Office. The Accountant reports to directly to the Controller.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Assists Controller with month-end closing duties; prepares and updates standard journal entries.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly and/or annual balance sheet schedules and account analyses.
  • Researches and resolves accounting or documentation problems and discrepancies. Prepares adjusting and correcting journal entries as needed.
  • Takes the lead in preparing for the annual audit and is the primary contact for the school’s auditors.
  • Maintains general ledger documents and files.
  • Assists with the preparation of reports provided to senior management and the Board of Trustees, including standard financial reports, ad-hoc reports, graphs and other presentation materials.
  • Maintains Fixed Asset Ledgers, capitalizing acquisitions, recording depreciation and disposals. Prepares fixed asset reports and posts entries to the general ledger.
  • Assists in the design and/or implementation of accounting department projects.
  • Takes the lead in preparation of all tax returns, including but not limited to Forms 990, 199, BOE-267, 571L, sales & use tax returns and any other required filings.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements as required for school’s debt covenants.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of sensitive financial and other data.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Cross-trains in accounts payable and accounts receivable, and is back-up to the Controller when s/he is out of the office.
  • Filing, collating, mailing, and other standard office procedures.
  • Performs other accounting, financial or administrative tasks as may be required from time to time by the Controller or the Chief Operating and Financial Officer.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty to the satisfaction of the administration. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field and 5+ years of relevant accounting experience required. Experience in non-profit accounting and knowledge of related FASB requirements preferred. Understanding of accounting theory with ability to research and resolve accounting application. Knowledge of non-profit reporting and tax filings preferred. CPA preferred.

LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION SKILLS : Ability to read, analyze and interpret written documents, write reports and letters to parents and others. Ability to present information verbally and in writing to parents, colleagues, and supervisors. Ability to communicate complicated concepts in simple, straightforward language.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide; create and interpret graphs; compute ratios and percentages, prepare and adhere to a budget, and use a calculator. Requires strong analytical skills.

TECHNICAL SKILLS: Experience with AP, AR and GL software, Blackbaud Financial Edge experience preferred. Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel. Ability to create reports and keep records. Must be organized and able to meet schedules and deadlines. Must be extremely accurate and thorough in checking work and ensuring forms are accurate and complete with required signatures, accounts to be charged, etc.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and apply common sense in dealing with every day and emergency situations. Ability to listen and respond to questions presented by colleagues and parents. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram and schedule form.
