GENERAL ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN

Salary Range: $3,426-$5,561/Monthly

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; non-exempt position.

Essential Functions: The incumbent reports to the General Accounting Supervisor and performs professional accounting work. The incumbent will: prepare, verify, and process complex journal entries with a high degree of accuracy, completeness, validity and adherence to State of California and California State University policies; reconcile the daily cash depository for the campus and its auxiliaries; maintain the department/budget table; maintain the chart of accounts; prepare various reconciliation reports; maintain financial security by following internal accounting controls; data entry and verification; file, maintain and organize file systems; create and update spreadsheets; coordinate and process various forms; follow up with outstanding items; participate in month and year-end closing processes; and participate in the implementation and upgrades of the financial accounting software.

Required Qualifications & Experience: Equivalent to four years of full-time responsible financial record-keeping experience; comprehensive knowledge of financial record keeping methods, procedures, and practices; and basic knowledge of governmental accounting and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Ability to: interpret and apply a wide variety of written rules and regulations; maintain accounting records for funds, programs, or activities involving multiple transactions; compile, verify, and reconcile financial data; use current computer word processing and spreadsheet programs, web browsers, query tools, integrated financial systems and/or other types of records management systems; investigate and resolve errors and discrepancies; read and write English at a level appropriate to the position; interpret computer-generated reports; plan, organize, and prioritize work; develop and communicate clear and comprehensive operating procedures; learn, interpret independently and apply a variety of complex policies and procedures; apply independent judgment, discretion and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough, and at times creative solutions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; exercise tact, courtesy, alertness, and good judgment in responding to others; and provide work direction to staff. Incumbent must possess excellent customer service skills, oral and written communication skills; and a demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Special Desired Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year college or university in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration or a closely related field. PeopleSoft Financials experience.
