Department Summary

Information Services (IS) is the central information technology unit at the University of Oregon and provides wide ranging services to campus. Information Services consists of four major functional areas: Customer Experience, which serves as the key contact point for interactions with campus clients and customers; Applications & Middleware, which manages and supports applications, integration services, identity management and data management; Information Security, which helps protect virtual or physical information; and Technology Infrastructure, which provides administration and support for the software, hardware, and services needed to support the campus IT environment. Information Services also includes the Network Technology Center Network for Education and Research in Oregon. Information Services consists of five units: Applications and Middleware, Technology Infrastructure, Customer Experience, Information Security and the CIO’s office. It also operates a regional educational network (NERO) and the grant-funded Advanced Network Technology Center (ANTC).Business Services is the group within Information Services that manages fiscal operations of the division. At present, Business Services’ annual budget is $21M with funding from various sources including general funds, service center funds, grants, and gifts.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Business Manager, the Accountant employs generally accepted accounting principles in performing accounts payable and monthly reconciliation, preparing purchase orders, paying invoices, processing contracts, performing payroll adjustments and journal vouchers, managing accounts receivable and service center billing, and managing the departmental purchasing card. This position classifies and interprets revenue, expenditure and other business data. This position works with interrelated accounts in an accounting system, allocating changes to funds and accounts, reconciling accounts, analyzing accounting transactions, preparing reports and maintaining account controls. This position provides information for budgetary purposes and prepares financial statements.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with CPA or PA certificate OR * Bachelor’s degree with 30 quarter (20 semester) hours of college-level accounting OR * 30 quarter (20 semester) hours of accounting courses from an accredited college or university and three years of accounting experience which must include at least 3 of the following: 1) Preparing transactions to be recorded in records of original entry2) Preparing journal entries, posting from journals to general ledger, or preparing original general ledger entries3) Summarizing data from a ledger to a trial balance4) Closing accounts at the end of an accounting period5) Applying PC spreadsheet, database, and word processing software6) Processing data using a computer.

  • Demonstrated strong computer skills, with working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite including Excel * Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds * Demonstrated problem solving skills * Ability to adapt within a rapidly changing technical environment * Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to audiences with a wide range of technical skills * Ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented, collaborative environment * Excellent organizational skills * Ability to set priorities, take initiative, be proactive and follow-up, manage diverse responsibilities and multiple tasks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Accounting experience within a higher education institution. * 3 years’ experience with accounting principles and methods, including the ability to analyze, report and interpret complex financial information * Knowledge of accounting software and database systems * Knowledge of Banner, including FIS and HRIS * Knowledge of public purchasing laws and processes * Knowledge of general IT purchasing concepts * Experience with ITIL or ITSM * A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
