The Arizona Game & Fish Department is responsible for managing Arizona’s fish and wildlife resource as an enduring public trust. In addition, the Department is charged with promoting safe and responsible use of watercraft and off-highway vehicles. Funding is provided from the sale of licenses and permits; watercraft registration fees; federal excise taxes on firearms, fishing equipment, boats, and other sporting goods; State lottery revenues; donations on State income tax forms; and various contracts and grants. JOB INFORMATION

Under direction of the Field Crew Supervisor, the Habitat Construction Crew Leader is responsible for the supervision and oversight of construction, maintenance, and repair of habitat development or maintenance projects that enhance, protect, or create habitat for wildlife, or structures utilized by the Department or the general public such as wildlife areas, conservation facilities, livestock enclosure fences, shooting facilities, wildlife water developments and fish hatcheries. This position supervises Habitat Construction Technicians, volunteers, and occasionally heavy equipment operators as assigned, maximizing productivity and use of resources. This position is accountable for ensuring compliance with established maintenance and construction procedures and OSHA compliance including environmental documents to ensure job safety, including the proper use of hazardous materials, hand and power tools, vehicles, and construction equipment. Coordinates project activities for crew and other personnel and ensures that appropriate documentation is completed. Oversees product quality and meets project deadlines. Responsible for proper storage, maintenance, loading and unloading and transport of materials and tools and inspects, replaces, maintains inventory for tools, equipment, and vehicles to ensure in proper working order. Supports other activities of other Department work units as requested/assigned. Attends and participates in department training and meetings as required. Work schedule will vary depending on project demand (e.g. eight day on/six day off or four ten-hour days). Position will require statewide travel and may include camping in remote areas for extended periods of time with seasonal exposure to hot, cold, and wet weather conditions. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The candidate will have knowledge of/in: general constructions experience (carpentry, plumbing, working with cement, welding, painting); wildlife and wildlife habitats; basic survey equipment, levels, string line, power tools, generators and welders; hazardous material handling; topographical map reading; basic use of GPS devices; basic first aid and CPR techniques; OHV operation; four-wheel drive operation. The candidate will have knowledge/skill in management, leadership, supervision, effective communication techniques (oral and written), project management, and time management. The candidate must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The ideal candidate will have two years of work experience in outdoor construction or maintenance work involving the operation of motorized automotive and construction equipment. The preferred candidate will have certification in first aid/CPR/AED, OSHA 30 certification or higher and forklift certification (class 5 and class 7).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid State of Arizona Commercial Driver’s License appropriate to the assignment (Class-A with tank endorsement). Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training in accordance with Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.
