Unix/Linux Engineer

Our client, a premier retail organization, I seeking a Principal Unix/Linux Engineer to join their growing team on a full time, permanent basis.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a maintenance role; this is engineering, design, architecture, and a subject matter expert!

Position Summary:

Acts as an SME for internal and external staff performing design, analysis, engineering, build and POC for Unix/Linux and Virtualization technologies. Analyzes the capabilities of existing *NIX based products that could be leveraged to solve business needs. Provides direction, training and guidance on complex technical issues. Creates tools/scripts that would help with automated system provisioning.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides in depth technical expertise in Operating System platforms focusing on AIX, Redhat, SUSE running on IBM/Client/Cisco hardware.
  • Performs design work to onboard new technologies by observing industry trends and analyzing existing technologies that could be leveraged to solve complex business needs.
  • Works as a technical lead for all OS, Virtualization and system automation projects and Executes POC w for new technologies and provide recommendations.
  • Provides technical input in development of Operating systems standards and processes by partnering with various cross functional teams.
  • Recommends and implements best practices for monitoring and capacity planning for Operating system platforms.
  • Ensures that system improvements are successfully implemented and monitored to increase efficiency.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent experience).
  • Extensive knowledge of the AIX, Redhat, SUSE, Vmware, Power VC, working knowledge of integrating with Cloud providers like Softlayer, Aws, Azure.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience with Unix operating systems as an engineer
  • Minimum 4 years of experience with Virtualization technologies like Vmware,Power VC, Power VM
  • 2 years of experience working with at least one of the cloud providers( Softlayer, AWS, Azure)
  • Extensive experience with System Upgrades and consolidations
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate architectural differences between various solutions in responsible areas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • RHCE
  • AIX Certified Systems Expert

Skills and Abilities:

  • Extensive experience in requirements analysis to collect record and analyze functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Ability to identify solutions, solve problem and improve processes and services by utilizing knowledge of internal business operations and external best practices.
