Technology Transfer Prof. 1 (Bioscience Business Development Executive)

Reporting to the Manager of Business Development within The Richard P. Feynman Center for Innovation (FCI), the Bioscience Business Development Executive (BDE) will serve on a team of BDEs charged with the business development of partnering and licensing opportunities aligned with Laboratory programmatic goals and technical line objectives.

Fundamental Responsibilities:
Establishing and maintaining industry partnerships as necessary to meet the requirements of Federal sponsors and

Identifying commercially viable and valuable technologies while facilitating their commercialization via established firms, new venture creation, corporate partnerships or collaborative R&D.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Team with program managers, line managers, scientists and principal investigators and key stakeholder technical divisions, to evaluate intellectual property (IP) landscape

Co-develop complimentary IP support strategies

Identify, scope and assess early-stage bioscience technologies

Translate and interpret technical concepts and ideas to external constituencies

Assist in the disclosure of new inventions or software

Provide objective feedback on invention disclosures to management for patenting consideration

Perform technology and market opportunity assessments

Select technologies for Laboratory internal development and further maturation

Develop IP support strategies to support programmatic goals

Review business plans and presentations

Independently represent technologies to, and lead technology discussions with, potential partners

Proactively market technologies

Develop and manage business relationships with industry partners

Negotiate research agreements and term sheets for licenses.

The Bioscience BDE will build trust and credibility across stakeholder divisions and create a unifying culture of cross-division collaboration. The Bioscience BDE must have excellent communication skills, understand how to balance persistence and patience in accomplishing short-range and long-range projects. The BDE should be curious about the technological subject matter and creative with respect to developing and executing deals. The BDE shall have a desire for learning the details of licensing and R&D agreements.

Ability to credibly coordinate between technical teams and business stakeholders.

Ability to occupy various roles, ranging from leadership to support, with an understanding of when each role is appropriate.

Demonstrated experience assessing relevant technology and linking technology to the needs of industry and consumers and/or other Federal agencies.

Basic understanding of customer relationships in private industry, universities, national laboratories, state and local governments, and/or communities.

Ability to exercise discretion in sensitive situations.

Demonstrated experience proactively anticipating and preempting potential problems.

Demonstrated experience managing time critical projects with constrained resources and dynamically evolving requirements.

Strong background in a bioscience-related scientific or engineering discipline.

Basic knowledge of intellectual property, patents, and copyrights.

Basic skills in evaluation of business and product development plans.

Knowledge of persuasion and negotiation techniques and concepts.

Knowledge of Technology Marketing techniques.

Willingness to travel for business.

Desired Skills:
Basic knowledge of the bioscience technical and research field and some understanding of how the portfolio broadly supports LANL’s national security science mission areas including Weapons Program, Global Security Programs, and Energy Programs.

Record of program development, developing/marketing proposals leading to strong revenue growth and new customer relationships.

Basic knowledge of data management issues and solutions in systems biology.

Possess a network of private sector, academic and government technology contacts.

Familiarity with U.S. intellectual property law.

Familiarity with contract law.

Familiarity with project management processes.

Knowledge of Federal, DOE, and Laboratory technology transfer policies and/or standard university technology transfer practices

Familiarity with program development in the Federal sector

Active Q Clearance

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a biological science or engineering discipline and a minimum of two years related experience. Advanced degree preferred.

Additional Details:
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
