Technical Buyer

In support of the Montana State University mission, the University Information Technology ( UIT ) promotes, develops, delivers, and facilitates the use of information technology services and resources.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical purchasing consultation and support to users based on technical need, position and assessment of users understanding of technology.
  • Responsible for all aspects of the UIT purchasing process including technical configuration support, quoting, receiving, record management and knowledge management.
  • Provide assistance and troubleshooting for a wide range of technical issues including problems with desktop computers, mobile devices, distributed servers, email, computer peripherals, software applications, operating systems, and network connectivity for computer users inside and outside of UIT .
  • Support software and license management by processing new software sales and license transfers and supporting other purchasing staff with software license renewals and updating software license tracking system.
  • Track compliance with University, state and federal procurement rules and regulations and educate individuals on acceptable practices.
  • Facilitate the timely and accurate transfer of products to and from UIT and campus departments by managing the physical receipt of products from shippers and making arrangements for pick-up with appropriate carriers.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Technical/Computer – Experience with information technology components, terminology, goods and services
  • Purchasing – Experience with technology purchasing processes and procedures/processing purchases verifying materials, costs and payments and ensuring timely delivery of goods and services to clients.
  • Customer Service – Working experience with common information technology questions and issues, and associated resolutions, as well as researching and resolving technical problems while supporting a wide variety of constituents.
  • Inventory Management – Working experience with inventory management/verifying and updating records regarding incoming shipments by logging in new inventory and comparing items received against bills of lading, invoices, purchase orders or other records.
  • Analysis – Analyzing information technology issues and identifying appropriate actions and resources to resolve/experience with comparing and contrasting technology products incorporating multiple variables.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, logistics, computer science or business administration or related field, plus two years of experience in information technology purchasing or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience negotiating purchasing agreements with vendors and experience with inventory control procedures.
  • Hands-On Experience with the following: workstations, mobile devices, operating systems, client -side and common workstation applications,
  • Performing cost and scenario analysis, and bench-marking.
  • Proficient knowledge of MSU and other governmental purchasing procedures; knowledge of Dynamics accounting software; and knowledge of proper packaging methods.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting and resolving advanced IT problems.
