Technical Associate

The Technical Associate Program (TAP) is designed to prepare, mentor, coach train and counsel qualified employees on processes and practices for potential placement in a technical position. The Technical Associate must complete a rotation in the NSC, NOC, Installation, Cabling, and Warehouse. Each rotation will last a period of 1-6 months, as needed. The duties and responsibilities for each position are listed below.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

NSC Technician

Summary: Provides network support to operational computer networks by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Maintains basic network operations and provides assistance to the network administrator.
  • Performs network troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose common network problems.
  • Provides users with network technical support.
  • Assists users with firewall modifications and applications.
  • Responds to needs and questions of users concerning their access of network resources.
  • Monitors routers, switches and other equipment to minimize network downtime.
  • Tests necessary software and hardware.
  • Contacts customers regarding issues or problems with their networks.

NOC Technician

Summary: The network technician will be responsible in maintaining and monitoring the telecommunications network, telecommunications systems, equipment, and applications that support carrier grade infrastructures. This includes, but not limited to platform availability, monitoring, trouble isolation, corrective action implementation, project delivery, and rotating out of hours on-call support in a network operation center. This position will work closely with other operational team members to support the mission critical architecture and strategic corporate initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Knowledge in telecommunications operations support on PBX, VoIP, DACs, carrier level operations, call processing, data, fiber optic, and transmissions network management;
  • Proficient at router management and network device configuration;
  • Troubleshoot telecommunication circuits, including, but not limited to T1, DS3, T-3, OC-3, OC-12, OC-48 and OC-192 circuits using various testing equipment and software;
  • Identify cabling specifications and various terminations. Including but not limited to copper and fiber optic cabling;
  • Install and test T1, T3, Ethernet, and MPLS circuits for Dedicated Access, Frame Relay, and ATM;
  • Knowledge of migration of carrier voice services from TDM to SIP;
  • Knowledge of wide area network routing protocols;
  • Knowledge of Unix/Linux internet servers and services;
  • Ability to write custom scripts for file transfers, alerting of potential outages, and general network management;
  • Ability and desire to share knowledge / experiences within a team environment;
  • Ability and knowledge of escalating internal and external issues ensuring timely resolution and notifications;
  • Coordinating emergency and routine maintenance with customers and vendors;
  • Researching and identify potential security vulnerabilities on network devices. Including but not limited to firewalls, IDS/IPS, advance malware appliances;
  • Identifies and replaces malfunctioning or inoperative equipment, such as circuit cards or processing units, and performs repairs and preventative maintenance;
  • Maintain and create procedure manuals and updating policies when applicable.

Installation/Structured Cabling/Warehouse

Summary : Competent at a high level to perform a variety of highly skilled technical work in installation and removal of various pieces of transport and data equipment. Responsible for installing copper and fiber cabling solutions and performing associated duties as assigned. Assist with inventory tracking.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Work with minimum supervision and be self-motivated.
  • Maintain and monitor inventory levels and accuracy.
  • Perform inventory cycle counts and help with reconciliation process.
  • Receiving and storage of inventory.
  • Configure, setup and prepare telecommunications equipment for installation team.
  • Interface with Installation Team and Engineering to resolve and trouble shoot order issues.
  • Installs and assembles new or modified data equipment components within SDN locations and at customer sites.
  • Installation of cabling in new and existing structures at customer and internal locations.
  • Must perform various administrative duties such as: preparing job forms per customer and engineering requests, monitoring daily job logs, preparing and completing all paperwork associated with installationcabling, and warehousing including completion of task documentation and time tracking.

Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret data and documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and installation manuals. Ability to write routine reports and respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Able to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, voltage, amperage proportions, percentages, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to apply formulas into excel spreadsheets.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Internet Explorer software, terminal services software, general router connectivity and commands, and CO telecommunications operations.
  • Individual should have knowledge of AC/DC power, general cabling standards, and electrical wiring maintenance and operation.
  • Individual should have a general overall knowledge of computer networking which include but is not limited to: routers, switches, firewalls, voice over IP, IP Telephony.
  • Individual should be skilled in understanding and using power monitor tools such as volt meter, amperage meter and test equipment and have a good understanding of battery utilization and potential measurements of AH calculation.
  • Individual should possess an understanding of Fiber Optic transport and understand Fiber panels, equipment panels. Prior experience with fiber testing tools and their function related to transport testing is helpful.
  • Individual should have knowledge of basic wire wrapping techniques and understanding of proper wrapping of Fiber, Power, Cat5 and wire management.
  • Certified Cisco Network Associate (CCNA) certification helpful.
  • Must possess a clean driver license to drive company vehicle.
  • Willing to work rotating shifts and Saturdays. Required to be on-call and report to work within 30 minutes.
  • Must be able to travel; some overnight travel may be required.
  • Must be able to work full days to accommodate travel requirements.
