Under the general direction of the LSIT Director of Infrastructure, responsible for implementing, administering, supporting, and enhancing critical services used by Campus and College constituencies which include, but are not limited to, GauchoSpace (campus LMS), Box (campus filesharing), web services, data backup/recovery, file sharing, network connectivity, and security. Maintains current knowledge of and acts as secondary support for all production and research systems managed by LSIT. Ensures the highest possible level of uptime for all critical services.

Minimum Requirements

Extensive experience managing hosted production services in a Unix/Linux production environment. Experience with SAN/NAS/Backup management. Excellent people skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team. Independent problem solving ability. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proven record of IT project execution from research to production deployments. Proven infrastructure, production system design and deployment, in a multi-platform environment, including experience with in-house development and hosted systems.

Desirable Requirements

Experience with the design and administration of LAMP environments (Linux, Apache, MySQL/Mariadb, PHP), standards-based mail systems, version control (git), package management software, and configuration management software. Expertise with RHEL/CentOS Linux, Perl, and Bash scripting.

System Administration

Jointly responsible for the administration, integration, and automation of all production and research systems within LSIT’s responsibility. Jointly responsible for monitoring system and network performance and resolving problems to maximize performance and availability.

Responsible for designing, building, testing, and documenting new devices, services, and programs to expand the College’s computing services. Interacts with faculty to understand their research and instructional needs. When appropriate, supports research on College systems.

Acts as third level support, solving problems that first and second tier staff could not. Provides leadership, training, and assistance to other staff members in the support, development, and integration of systems and services within a dynamic and complex environment. Independently identifies technical needs and implements solutions. Documents and automates routine tasks so that they can be delegated other staff.

Research and Planning

Jointly responsible for technical planning. Serves as project lead, when appropriate, implementing the department’s project management process. Develops written policies and procedures for technical operations and project management.

Coordinates with groups in support of their research. Interacts with various external IT groups, and when possible, coordinates efforts to promote inter-operability. Takes part in joint projects with outside groups (both as a member and project lead) in support of the College’s goals.

Maintains a state-of-the-art understanding of network, server, and application trends, and analyzes their application to the College’s research, instruction, and administrative functions.
