The University of Washington Department of Laboratory Medicine is a large (over 900 employee) department based at the University of Washington Medical Center on the Seattle campus. Our clinical and research activities include operation of the clinical laboratories that perform testing for the hospitals and clinics of the UW Medicine system, and extensive research and method development to advance the field of Laboratory Medicine. UW Laboratory Medicine is a highly complex department responsible for providing laboratory results for patients at both Harborview and University Medical Centers. Those results are populated into multiple computer systems used by physicians providing patient care. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing applications and interfaces that accurately represent laboratory data used in direct patient care, support laboratory operations.

Our Laboratory Medicine Department has an outstanding opportunity for a SENIOR COMPUTER SPECIALIST – SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR LEAD . The System Administrator (SA) Lead is responsible for configuration, deployment, operation, support, security, and maintenance of systems hardware, software, and related facility and infrastructure necessary to meet the computing needs of the Department of Laboratory Medicine. This individual will ensure that system hardware, software, operating systems, security, and related procedures adhere to departmental standards; assist project teams with technical issues; and serve as a lead to other staff performing similar functions.

Position Responsibilities to Include :

  • Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, disk arrays, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot issues.

  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted users.
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
  • Perform research and participate in training as necessary to update skills and knowledge necessary to work effectively with new and changing technologies.
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
  • Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.

  • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.

  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization

    as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.

  • Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment.

  • Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.

  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures and standards.

  • Maintain operational, configuration, security, or other procedures.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field AND

  • Four to five years system administration experience.

  • Linux/Unix experience

  • Experience supporting and configuring firewalls

  • Experience leading staff

An equivalent combination of education and

experience may be considered

DESIRED:

  • AIX system installation, deployments, and management

  • VMWare system installation, deployment, and management

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, i.e. UWMC, HMC,

CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCCA, Roosevelt, Rosen, etc.
