This work will be done in close collaboration with several other UC campus institutes. The project focus is to develop novel genetic approaches that may be used to combat mosquito-borne diseases.

Under close supervision, the incumbent will assist in the research on developing different strategies in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster to control Gene Drive constructs, for their safe development in the laboratory and as remediation strategies for field applications.

Duties will include the following: conducting experiments utilizing CRISPR/Cas9 technology through routine biochemistry and molecular biology procedures such as DNA isolation, recombination-based cDNA cloning, bacterial transformation and growth, protein purification, Western-blotting, etc. as well as insect biology including Drosophila and mosquito genetics and transgenesis. The incumbent will assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed. Participation in laboratory meetings and journal discussions is also required.

  • Must have good eyesight (normal or corrected) and dexterity to handle fruit flies.

  • Able to work a flexible schedule and overtime that may include occasional evenings and weekends as required by experiments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology and genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques, acquired through a Bachelor’s Degree in biology or related field; and/or equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.

  • Demonstrated experience with confocal microscopy, immunostaining, and fluorescent in-situ hybridization.

  • Demonstrated experience with molecular biology and protein techniques such as PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis, and molecular genetic assays.

  • Demonstrated experience in the preparation of scientific reagents including common buffers and stock solutions.

  • Previous experience using Drosophila as a research model, including maintaining Drosophila stocks.

  • Knowledge and experience with basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, micro-pipettes, biosafety cabinets, incubators, autoclaves, balances, pH meters, and microscopes.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, follow and troubleshoot established lab protocols and lab procedures with direction from PI.

  • Familiarity with Apple and PC computers and associated word processing and spreadsheet software with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribution to the preparation and editing of scientific papers, manuscripts, and lab data. Experience presenting research to formal audience.

  • Must have research experience with insects (preferably Drosophila melanogaster).

  • Proven knowledge of MSDS’s (Material Data Safety Sheets) and the hazard communication and Injury and Illness and Prevention Program (IIPP). Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing, safe handling of chemicals, and the use of protective items.

  • Demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
