INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT:
The Office of the Attorney General, Department of Legal Affairs (OAG) is a pre-eminent, constitutional office, which serves as the chief lawyer to all state agencies and provides legal protections for Floridians against fraud and through the enforcement of the state’s laws. The OAG, is a cabinet agency in the executive branch of Florida state government.

OAG employees are paid biweekly. All state employees are required to participate in the direct deposit program pursuant to s. 110.113 Florida Statutes.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Three years of secretarial or clerical work experience.
College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for each year of the required work experience.
Vocational/technical training in the area of secretarial science or office/business studies can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for each year of the required work experience.
A high school diploma or its equivalent can substitute for one year of the required work experience.


JOB SUMMARY:

This is a research oriented, minimally supervised position; handling complex legal issues in the capital and criminal appeals arenas. It requires investigative skills and a substantial legal expertise permitting the retrieval and analysis of arcane, areas of historical, archival and highly technical points of law. It requires an ability to succinctly communicate information acquired in both oral and written formats and requires excellent people skills.

Conducts detailed research of a number of topics relating to the criminal law, capital and non-capital. Responsibilities include maintaining and updating an attorney bench-book; contribute to any expert bank for multi-disciplines; prepare reports and position papers specifically assigned by the bureau chief or authorized assistant. Summarizing appellate decisions for possible dissemination.

Prepares cases for state and federal evidentiary hearings; prepares reports for legislative matters, position papers and other matters.

Handles exigencies and other eclectic issues that arise in a specific bureau based on directions from the regional bureau chief.

Maintains records and other materials for historical and archival purposes.

Attends hearings and provides support for attorneys assigned to evidentiary hearings.

Supervises legal interns and works with other non-legal attorneys and clerks.

Deals directly with the public and other public entities as to matters dealing with criminal appeals.


KSA/EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Legal research experience essential; a law degree or certificate in paralegal studies desirable. Excellent writing skills and good computer skills essential.
