Software Engineering Intern

The Opportunity
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks a professional, innovative, and detail-oriented individual for a Software Engineering Internship. The ideal candidate for this position will be able to work part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer. If you are a current student at an accredited university in the Pullman, Washington or Boise, Idaho area looking for an opportunity to develop your software skills, learn from industry leading engineers, and enhance your academic learning then this may be the position for you!
Software Engineering Intern
Responsibilities:

  • Answer customer questions and inquiries by phone and email.
  • Troubleshoot customer issues with SEL software.
  • Verify that software meets requirements.
  • Provide support to engineering staff as needed.
  • Follow engineering quality assurance procedures.
  • Continuously identify, measure, and improve processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Current student pursuing a degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or equivalent
  • Programming experience in C#, C++, Java, or equivalent OO programming language
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Background check results satisfactory to SEL
  • Negative drug test result(s)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work part-time during the school year and part-time/full-time during the summer
  • Practical knowledge of developing Microsoft Windows applications
  • Knowledge of SQL and database concepts
  • Experience using revision control and source code management systems such as Git, Mercurial, SVN, and Rational ClearCase

  • Middle tier APIs & web services in Java (DropWizard)
  • Dynamic web applications written in JavaScript (React, ECMAScript 6, Sass)
  • Core data and infrastructure development with HBase, Elastic Search, ZooKeeper, Redis, MySQL, and Memcached.
  • Running, monitoring, and deploying to thousands of servers in multiple data centers & the cloud (DevOps & SRE)

Candidates should have web development experience (projects like mobile apps, web apps, or games beyond coursework is a plus) and top candidates will have:

  • An unmatched curiosity to learn and grow their skills with new challenges
  • A strong understanding of HubSpot’s business, products, and culture
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Confidence taking on big initiatives and leading projects in a fast-paced environment

As an engineer you will get a MacBook Air and a GitHub Enterprise account on your first day. Working closely with your team, you will start shipping production code right away.

We are seeking a Software Engineering Co-op/Intern for our top-flight engineering team in Boston for Summer 2017. The engineering team at Datto is a highly collaborative organization consisting of engineers with the highest levels of technical depth, programming skill, and a passion for quality. As a Software Engineering Intern you will have the opportunity to write cutting edge backup solutions, and collaborate with project management and quality assurance staff on innovative projects.

The Datto-Boston team focuses on the fastest growing segment of this market: cloud application backup. The technology integrates the Datto backup solution via cloud application APIs. Our technology stack makes extensive use of Ruby, Redis, Cassandra and PostgreSQL. Our engineers enjoy the challenge of working across the full stack: building new customer facing features as well as continually improving the underlying infrastructure.

For candidates that do not have housing within a commutable distance to our Boston office, Datto provides low cost housing for the length of your internship/co-op.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Code web applications using Ruby on Rails
  • Engage with TDD and BDD regularly
  • Work in an agile structure with small team of full-time developers

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Pursuing BS, or graduate student in Computer Science or related field
  • Strong hands-on engineering skills
  • Knowledge of relational databases including MySQL and PostgreSQL
  • High levels of creativity and quick problem solving capabilities
  • Know the Unix command line
  • Solid understanding of Git
  • Ability to obtain work authorization in the United States
