The Senior Systems Engineer is part of a team of technical people who are responsible for the overall operation of the UNIX and Linux systems environments at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC). Additionally, this individual will be part of the team that designs, implements, and delivers UNIX/Linux infrastructure to the enterprise. This individual will be highly technically skilled in UNIX and Linux and possess excellent communication skills, and leadership capabilities. The Sr. Systems Engineer will have responsibility for solutions design, project management, and managing and supporting various AIX UNIX, Sun Solaris, and RHEL Linux systems. The candidate must possess experience with high-availability UNIX architecture and virtualization and be able to design, implement, and maintain the environment.

Senior Systems Engineers are responsible for projects, architecture design, tier 3 troubleshooting, root cause analysis, upgrades, and expansion. Project responsibilities include project coordination, detailed implementation/migration planning, meeting timelines, and coordinating vendor resources. Responsibilities include completing assigned tasks on projects, implementation, migrations, meeting timelines, and coordinating vendor repairs. As part of solutions delivery, the Sr. Systems Engineer will also be responsible for completing documentation and knowledge transfer necessary to transition new services to the Administration Team for ongoing support and enhancements. They will provide Tier 2-3 support to Administration staff that maintain the environment, as well as work closely with the architecture group in design support and validation of new designs and installations.

Education / Experience: Bachelor of Science in Information Systems, related field of study or equivalent work experience. 5-7+ years relevant experience architecting, implementing, and managing AIX UNIX and RHEL Linux.

Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Certifications in AIX preferred. Certifications in RHEL Linux a plus.

Essential Functions:

1. Provide in depth working knowledge of AIX UNIX and RHEL Linux.

2. Design and implement highly available UNIX and Linux solutions integrating key data center technologies including but not limited to: virtualization, backup/DR, and replication.

3. Ensure that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational standards and disaster recovery requirements.

4. Perform project coordination duties for assigned projects to include providing detailed implementation/migration planning, managing to schedules and due dates, coordinating communication between project stakeholders, and providing project status reports.

5. Develops and reviews processes and technical documentation (run books) to transition new solutions to the Administration Team.

6. Recommend and guide improvements across the converged infrastructure service layers of network connectivity, server consumption, storage, virtualization configuration, and operating systems integration.

7. Configures, maintains and monitors systems infrastructure to enhance availability, improve performance, and ensure adequate capacity.

8. Perform system monitoring, diagnostic and corrective action, complex root cause analysis and implement corrective measures to prevent future service interruptions.

9. Identifies and understands issues, problems, and opportunities; compares data from different sources to draw conclusions; uses effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions; and takes action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences.

10. Participates in the development and implementation of technical standards, policies, and procedures.

11. Works as a liaison with contractors and vendors as needed.

12. Works independently or as a member of interdisciplinary teams on complex projects. Provide subject matter expertise and consulting services to our internal clients.

13. Ensure system practices are followed for all change, capacity, performance, and threshold management.

14. Implement system Disaster Recovery capabilities to meet each application?s Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) according to their assigned tiers.

15. Constantly seek out areas for improvement, automation, and efficiencies.

16. Serves as a mentor and resource for less experienced team members

Skills & Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of practical experience as an AIX UNIX and Linux systems engineer or administrator in a complex multi-platform, multi-protocol environment.
  • Experience with PowerHA and LPAR configurations utilizing dual VIOS servers.
  • Proficient in the setup of virtual devices VFC, Vscsi, SEA.
  • Familiarity with management of systems using HMC and HMC management.
  • Familiarity with using SAN volumes, Powerpath, and ODM drivers.
  • Expertise in Linux and UNIX/AIX system installation, configuration, administration, maintenance, tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of VMware and a variety of server/systems monitoring and alerting, analysis, management, and configuration tools.
  • Experience with automation tools such as UCSD, VRealize, Puppet, Chef or Foreman desired.
  • Experience with scripting language such as BASH, PowerShell, Perl, Ruby, or Python.
  • Strong knowledge of physical and virtual infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of networking and enterprise data storage.
  • Knowledge of computer security systems, applications, procedures and techniques.
  • Experience and knowledge of SQL, Oracle, and Oracle ASM
  • Knowledge of common network protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP, NTP, SFTP).
  • Good understanding of networking and distributed computing concepts including the principles of network routing, switching, and client/server programming.
  • Experience in managing technical projects, setting realistic timelines, and communicating status.
  • Able to solve problems independently, quickly, and completely and communicate them clearly to upper management.
  • Must be independent, organized, self-motivated and responsible.
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude and critical thinking skills.
  • Possesses, acquires, and maintains the technical/professional expertise required to do the job effectively and to create effective customer solutions. Technical/professional expertise is demonstrated through problem solving, applying technical knowledge, and product and service management for the functional area in which employee operates.
