Senior Java Developer

Job Summary

The Senior Java Developer independently designs and makes modifications to complex applications from detailed specifications. This role assists in the design, creation, deployment, and maintenance of programs by performing work as an expert in the specified language. Our developer displays a good understanding of how data is related across multiple databases, tables and platforms. This role demonstrates effective communication skills to interpret the needs of clients and coordinate with other Information Systems teams. This position takes a leadership role on highly complex projects and provides technical leadership to less experienced staff.

Characteristics and Responsibilities

Development (70%)

Design, Code, test and maintain applications that process business data.

Assist Quality Assurance teams in testing of applications.

Participate in On-call rotation to resolve applications failures.

Assist in research and issue resolution for processing of business data.

Monitor and trouble-shoot system performance, resolve issues (on-call issues, performance issues, etc.) and coordinate with respective support teams to resolve software and hardware issues.

Create, lead or participate in creation of, advice and/or approve technical specification documents for new and modified code.

Translate technical details into business terminology to bridge gaps between clients and IT.

Provide daytime and nighttime production support for applications to provide positive customer service.

Utilize source control software to maintain integrity of production software, including prior versions of code.

Follow defined Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Change Control processes.

Develop and maintain system level documentation.

Coordinate development activities with other teams, e.g. database management, infrastructure configuration, quality assurance testing.

Leadership (30%)

Provide leadership, expertise and solutions on complex initiatives including all projects and maintenance work.

Capable of making independent decisions.

Mentors others and may represent management at times.

Takes a leadership role on highly complex projects and provides guidance to less experienced staff.

Qualifications

U.S. Citizenship is required for this position due to Department of Defense restrictions

Work Experience

Required

6 or more years of experience in Information Systems performing development work OR a combination of relevant experience and demonstrated ability to meet the Information Systems Career Ladder Competencies which include Focus, Leadership, Design/Analysis, Support/Implementation, Strategy, Budget and Analytic Ability.

Experience with object oriented development (OOP/OOD) using the Java programming language and popular libraries such as Spring, STRUTS, Log4j, Apache, etc.

Knowledge of frontend development technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript

Knowledge of Internet protocols (HTTP, get, put, post, etc)

RDBMS experience (SQL Server, DB2, etc)

Experience developing web services using REST/JSON and SOAP/XML/WSDL/DTD

Experience using Integrated Development Environments (RSA, Eclipse)

Experience using Java Application Servers (WebSphere, JBoss, Tomcat, etc)

Experience using multiple operating systems (Windows, Redhat, zOs)

Experience using different build scripts including Ant, Maven

Education

Required

Bachelor Degree in Data processing degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field OR equivalent post high school education and/or work related experience
