Senior Institutional Research Analyst

For over 40 years, Portland State’s Office of Institutional Research and Planning has provided high quality analysis and reporting to decision makers, faculty, students and external constituencies. The office is highly regarded for its responsiveness, accuracy, and attention to customer needs, as well as its leadership in the adoption of innovative approaches to institutional research. The Office comprises a director, associate director, four research assistants, an executive support specialist, a course evaluation specialist, and two or more graduate research assistants. It reports directly to the university president. Professional staff members regularly serve on committees and task forces on a variety of topics and actively participate in professional associations, such as the Pacific Northwest Association for Institutional Research and the Association for Institutional Research. In addition, staff members may develop or participate in sponsored research projects on topics related to higher education.

Position Summary

The Office of Institutional Research and Planning at Portland State University is seeking an experienced professional to provide institutional research support for planning and decision making. Reporting to the director, the position is responsible for extracting, analyzing, modeling, and reporting data from both institutional and external data bases; developing and conducting research studies using statistical techniques; employing data mining or analytics in support of institutional decision making; serving on and supporting task forces and committees on a variety of topics; and, working collaboratively on projects with colleagues within and outside the institutional research office.

A – Administrative

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in related discipline.

• A minimum of 6 years demonstrated and increasingly responsible work experience in an institutional research, institutional effectiveness, or enrollment management office.

• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel, Access, Power Point and Word; SPSS , SAS , or similar statistical package; and business intelligence/analytical systems.

• Demonstrated technical expertise developing queries and reports from relational data bases and business intelligence systems.

• Demonstrated proficiency with descriptive and inferential statistics and research design and methods.

• Demonstrated experience in data modeling, quantitative analysis, trend analysis, forecasting, and professional report preparation.

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in evaluation and assessment techniques, survey research, and statistical applications.

• Demonstrated experience in writing reports and presenting data to a wide variety of audiences.

• Demonstrated ability to take direction and complete work on time with a high degree of quality and customer service.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in a related discipline.

• Seven or more years of demonstrated and increasingly responsible work experience in an institutional research, institutional effectiveness, or enrollment management office.

• Experience with IBM Cognos;

experience with Banner.

• Familiarity with higher education issues, trends, and research literature on topics relevant to institutional research.

• Demonstrated ability to maintain strong working relationships with internal and external colleagues.

• Experience in university environment and understanding and appreciation of academic culture.

• Strong oral and written communication skills.

• Ability to demonstrate initiative, be resourceful and flexible, and pay close attention to detail.

• Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.

Work Days/Hours

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement

The starting annual salary rate for this position will be between $74K and $80K dependent upon qualifications and experience. This includes an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities.
