RESIDENCE LIFE COORDINATOR

July 2017 Start Date . The University of Iowa is seeking candidates to help us create inclusive and dynamic living-learning communities! We are a student learning focused department that provides the challenge and support needed to advance your career in housing and student affairs. Hall Coordinators manage the daily operations of a residence hall where all students reside in living-learning communities. They also select, train, and supervise RA/student staff as well as oversee a 24-hour desk. Additionally, they coordinate community development activities and advise hall government. Opportunities are also available to serve on departmental and campus wide committees and teach college courses.

This is a required professional live-in position that offers a furnished apartment and meal plan. Additionally, the University of Iowa has a pet policy for live in professional staff. The position offers a salary of $36,944.00 for a 12-month appointment and excellent University benefits.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND SPECIFIC JOB TASKS

Policy Development and Implementation

Assist in the investigation of policy violations, damages, thefts, etc. Follow up with appropriate staff and students to determine accuracy.

Support a discipline system that encourages responsible student behavior.

Participate in development and implementation of University Housing policy. Update student staff of procedural and policy changes.

Participate in a live-in on-call emergency response rotation. Staff must be able to provide crisis response and respond to duty calls throughout campus. Duty vehicles are available for staff members that meet fleet services safety standards.

Student/Community Development

Participate in the development and implementation of academic initiatives and living learning communities; including maintaining effective working relationships with Residence Education Coordinators and Campus Partners.

Create, design and implement, along with Assistant Director(s) and other management staff in University Housing & Dining, a yearly community development plan for the residence hall and Living and Learning Communities that focuses on creating a community of learners that encompasses the entire hall, building operations and community partners.

Plan, direct, and support educational, academic, personal and career decision-making programming for respective buildings in collaboration with other Residence Education staff.

Advise, direct, and provide leadership to building student government association(s).

Customer Service

Support residents in resolving housing, general living, personal , and academic problems and refer to appropriate advisory services.

Respond to inquiries and complaints from students, staff, and public (including parents).

Showcase University residence hall facilities and services to prospective students, parents, and the University community through admission tours and new student orientation.

Leadership

Provide direction, assignments, feedback, and coaching to assigned staff such as Resident Assistants, Desk Clerks, graduate assistants, union-contracted staff and/or student staff to assure outcomes are met.

Financial and Facility Administration

Ensure appropriate staff coverage in building or building complex.

Manage the day-to-day operations of a University residence hall building(s), grounds and staff.

Prepare and oversee the preparation of special and periodic reports.

Maintain appropriate administrative records.

Assist in maintaining an acceptable level of appearance of the interior/exterior of buildings and grounds and communicate with custodial operations and maintenance management staff for major problem areas (i.e. newspapers, overflow of trash, garbage on sidewalks/stairs, major repairs).Propose improvements to halls.

Human Resources

Provide supervision to graduate assistants, resident assistants, desk clerks, student staff and support staff as assigned.

Recruit, select, supervise, train and evaluate desk staff. Recommend disciplinary action, including termination of employment of student staff.

Direct, schedule, assign, and monitor the work of information desk.

Assist in the planning, implementation and evaluation of training workshops and in-service sessions prior to and throughout the academic year.

Instruct the Resident Assistant training class which meets each semester.

Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of related education and supervisory experience. Experience Required:

1-3 years of experience in staff supervision, programming, university administration, budget management, knowledge of student development and first year student transition.

Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to effectively transmit, receive and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors at a working proficiency level.

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, etc.) software applications.

Demonstrates a working proficiency in the ability to work with variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of diverse individuals.

Demonstrates a working proficiency in the ability to collaborate and interact with individuals and groups.

Demonstrates the ability to adjust and develop self to prepare for new or changing assignments, processes, people or priorities as organizational needs dictate at a working proficiency level.

Demonstrates a working knowledge of and ability to adhere to established processes and procedures when counseling students to help their emotional, physical, occupational and social development. Desirable Qualifications:

A Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Personnel, Higher Education or a related area is highly desirable.

One year full-time live-in residence hall experience.
