Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

Salary Range: $70,000 – $90,000

Location: Portland, OR (Marquam Hill)

Functions/Duties of Position

The Research Associate provides high-level professional analytic support in research activities at the Center for Health Systems Effectiveness (CHSE). The Center is devoted to transforming health systems through actionable cross-disciplinary and collaborative research. The Research Associate will assist with study design and formulation of research questions and participate in data management, analysis, and dissemination of findings in health services research and program evaluations. The Research Associate will be responsible for:

Collaborating with Principal Investigators to design research and evaluations, manage data, and implement and interpret advanced statistical analyses focused on healthcare expenditures, utilization and quality

Managing and analyzing of a large quality measures database constructed with health insurance claims from Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial carriers from multiple states

Identification/incorporation of other publicly available data sources to support research goals

Rigorous documentation of code and methods and adherence to principles of reproducibility

Innovation, troubleshooting, and problem-solving at all stages of research and evaluation

Contributing to the development of manuscripts and other reports including writing and editing, interpretation of results, and creation of compelling data visualizations

Coordinating and managing a variety of research activities on multiple projects

Communicating with a diverse group of project team members

Commitment to continuing education and self-improvement as well as participation in the cross-education of fellow research staff via trainings and presentations

Performing other duties as requested by the Supervisor or Center Director

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in related field (Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Economics, Health Services Research) and 5 years of relevant experience, OR Master’s degree and 3 years of relevant experience

Minimum of 5 years’ related research experience

Strong programming ability using any combination of R, Stata, SAS

Experience working with and maintaining large data sets

Working knowledge of statistical theory and hypothesis testing, quantitative analysis methods and database management techniques

Deep knowledge of public health or issues relevant to health services research and health program/policy evaluation

Ability to exercise sound judgment in making independent analytic decisions and maintain thorough documentation of the decision-making process

Exemplary communication skills and ability to effectively present research findings to diverse audiences within and outside OHSU

Strong commitment to rigorous research methods, objectivity and accuracy of findings, and reproducibility of results

Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in claims data management and analysis, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance data

Working knowledge of SQL

Database management experience

Experience working in a Windows Server environment

Experience working in Linux/Unix environment

Knowledge of Medicaid reform, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) and healthcare payment reform
