R&D Process Engineer

Land O’Lakes Dairy Foods division is a leading marketer of a full line of dairy-based consumer, foodservice and food ingredient products across the United States. This division also includes Global Dairy Ingredients that sells a portfolio of value-added dairy ingredients (specialty powders, milk powder, cheese, butter and whey) and offers expertise to large international customers.

Position Purpose:
This position will further deepen and broaden the R&D process engineering knowledge and capability across Dairy Foods. The candidate will lead and support key technical initiatives with R&D product development teams and Operations to design processes for product or technology innovation, as well as establish control and capabilities in new systems.
The candidate will take on a variety of job responsibilities, such as:
Provide practiced engineering proficiency to the feasibility assessment, development and commercialization of products & processes.
Support the origination of prototypes and the development of technical approach and risk assessment related to new product and process development from bench-top to pilot-plant and through to plant-scale.
Develop robust technical learning plans to meet project objectives and deliver technology solutions.
Develop product & process specifications based on acceptable tolerance intervals, through process capability studies and statistical methods.
Apply fundamental engineering principles to further deepen R&D knowledge of product-process interactions in existing and new production systems.
Support or lead the identification & exploration of new process technologies with an eye toward industry innovation and trends.
Participate as an active member of cross-functional business teams including Marketing, Operations, Quality and Sourcing.

Required Experience & Education:
B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering or related field.
4+ years’ experience in food research or manufacturing.

Required Competencies & Other Skills:
Firm understanding of fundamental principles of key unit operations for food processing and ability to navigate plant processes to provide process support to R&D product and manufacturing project teams.
Experience supporting or leading new product / process / technology development and margin management / productivity / cost savings initiatives, including scale-up and plant trials.
Experience with process capability and control principles.
Strong understanding of food systems, ingredients and processing interactions.
Solid project planning and organization skills.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and influence skills applicable across broad cross-functional audience.
Proactive and results oriented.

Preferred Experience & Education:
Experience in the dairy or other consumer packaged goods industry.

Preferred Competencies & Other Skills:
Ability to design experiments & interpret data by applying statistical methods and to report implications in an effective manner.
Firm understanding and familiarity with analytical or physical testing tools for material characterization.
Likes challenges, embraces change and seeks out ways to improve the way things are done or bring additional capabilities or tools to the organization.
