Python Developer (full-stack)

In 2002, SellerEngine introduced the first automated pricing and inventory management tool for Amazon sellers. For almost 15 years we have coached, supported and learned from thousands of sellers, solving problems and helping businesses grow. Our software is smart enough to understand how customers want to run their businesses, and powerful enough to run 24/7 on nine global Amazon Marketplaces.

We are hiring a Python Developer with a strong commitment to code quality to help us build the end-to-end functionality for our internal systems and customer-facing product, ready to share strategies and insights from your experience developing complex systems. One of our primary systems executes business logic based on changing data over a billion times a day, running over 10,000 operations per second on our MongoDB cluster!

What You’ll Be Doing:
In this role, you’ll work on a variety of projects, including systems that transform data in complex ways at high throughput and user interfaces to manage these systems. This could involve modifying the back end architecture and Python code to scale better or support new features for internal or external customers, or making heavy front end changes to implement a new feature or enhance UX. We’re always pushing various scaling and performance-related envelopes too, which keeps things very interesting. You’ll be working on a self-organizing Agile team doing database-centric web application development, and bring your high standards for code quality, consistency, and test coverage to the group.

Our Technical Stack:
Our back end includes Python, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Linux, haproxy, RabbitMQ, CherryPy – and a slew of other Python libraries. Our front end includes JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and GWT. As a team, we use GitHub, Trello, Slack, and Google to stay connected and manage workflows.

What We’ve Gotta Have:

  • Minimum 3 years experience developing data driven web applications.
  • Experience developing Python applications (going beyond Django, as a scripting language, or for scientific projects).
  • Experience working in a Linux- or BSD-heavy environment.
  • Experience with software architecture, object-oriented design, and/or TDD.
  • Excitement about working on a small engineering team working on a deeply complex set of systems, where everybody contributes in a variety of ways and loves to learn.

What Would Be Nice:

  • Experience with Scrum, XP, or similar practices.
  • Experience with large-scale data processing and constantly shifting scaling-related challenges.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Java/GWT, or web development.
  • Background working on self-organizing teams.
  • A passion for continuous improvement throughout the software development life cycle.

Working for SellerEngine:
Despite the basketball hoop and ping pong table, we’re not the kind of startup you read about on Hacker News. We keep sane hours, enjoy relaxed lunches together and have been profitable since 2002 – without the help of VC funding or Angel investors.

Our office is a relaxed environment without formal schedules, CMMI checklists, or cubicles. SellerEngine’s combined team represents 9 nationalities, speaks a total of 13 languages and based in 3 countries. We’re in a massive warehouse space in inner SE Portland with plenty of quiet work spaces, secure bike parking, and a full kitchen stuffed with organic food and beverages taking care of everyone from vegan to omnivore.

Employee benefits are great too, which include 100% covered health insurance premiums, 25 days of PTO, paid family leave, and a quarterly profit sharing plan.

How to Apply:
Please submit your resume with a cover letter that includes: 1) why you’re interested in working with SellerEngine in particular, 2) how you meet each of the listed qualifications, and 3) if applicable, a link to your GitHub or relevant Python code samples. We are moving quickly on this recruitment, so you can expect to receive an email back from our recruiter within 24 hours of your application. Thanks!
